Uppsala University, Department of Medical Cell Biology

The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University has a strong and international research environment with about 100 employees, including around 25 PhD students, 20 postdocs and 30 researchers and professors.

Duties/Project description: Peter Bergsten’s research group at the Department of Medical Cell Biology and the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health (https://www.mcb.uu.se/res/groups/pb/) works to increase the understanding of how metabolic disease develops and can be hindered, in particular in children with obesity or inborn error of metabolism. The research approach is translational, where in vivo work in patient cohorts is combined with in vitro work in cellular models. In vivo methods include annual assessments of patients including anthropometry, oral glucose tolerance test and determining concentrations of hormones, nutrients and genes in blood samples obtained from the patients as well as from control subjects. In vitro methods include culture, treating and genetically modifying cells and functionally characterize the cells including hormonal and metabolic responses.

We are looking for a qualified PhD student who will work with patient cohorts (evaluate assessments, handle and analyze patient samples and data) and cellular models (including isolated islets of Langerhans and cell-lines) to increase our understanding of mechanisms implicated in how obesity and inborn error of metabolism manifest themselves in children.

Requirements: Master's degree in medicine or similar. The ideal candidate should be highly skilled in performing metabolic research in both patient cohorts and cellular models. Specific emphasis is put on personal qualities such as the ability to communicate, in planning, and in organizational skills. Excellent spoken and written English language skills are also required. You are expected to actively cooperate with other members of the research group and develop towards independency. The applicant is further expected to actively take part in teaching and supervising students.

Additional qualifications: Documented work or certificates from patient and cellular work is a merit. Experience from work with isolated islets of Langerhans and different methods for functionally characterizing isolated islets are desirable, but not required. Personal qualifications will be of great significance in the evaluation process.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/?languageId=1.
