Description of subject area of the employment:

Our society faces great challenges if we shall be able to meet the global sustainability goals. Electrification is crucial. An increased and more multifaceted demand for electric machines in turn increases the need for new, flexible and efficient both production and recycling methods. The extensive and rapid technological development, with digitalization, connectivity and now also AI – often referred to as Industry 4.0 – that has swept over the industry during more than a decade provides new technical conditions for such solutions. At the same time, a parallel focus on the role for humans, sustainability and resilience – often referred to as Industry 5.0 – in clearly growing. Wisely used, these industrial revolutions can be combined in projects that for example utilize new technology for innovative and collaborative solutions connected to circularity.

The research area of industrial robotics at Uppsala University is in an expansive phase with new projects, possibilities and collaborations connected to our focus on sustainable solutions, renewable energy and electric vehicles. We develop new innovative, smart and highly flexible solutions for robotized assemblies, testing and recycling of electric machines and batteries. Our prime and largely unique strengths are the combined broad and deep expertise with relevance for the research area available at our institution, our clear and direct connection between smart robotics and concrete sustainable applications, and a strong focus on that effective virtual development shall be validated through practical experiments with full scale industrial equipment.

The education area of industrial robotics is growing very fast. Every year we have more than 400 engineering students taking lab exercises with the ten full size industrial robots available in our three robot labs, which corresponds to a tenfold increase in less than ten years. At the same time, the demand for both industrial competence and University courses continue to increase. This leads to a large need for teachers that can educate and supervise at all academic levels within the subject area, in particular within first and second cycle courses. Applicants for the position are expected to have a solid experience with proven successful results of taking responsibility for education and development with project- and lab exercise-focused teaching elements where digital and physical technologies are combined. In particular practical elements using industrial automation equipment, preferably with applications with clear research connections to the subject area.

Duties:

  • Teaching and administration. Teaching duties include course responsibility and course administration. The main duty within the employment will be to take responsibility for, implement, examine and drive the development of project based and lab exercise intense courses and course parts within the undergraduate education. The teaching consists to a large part of taking the step from theory to supervision of practical lab exercises with programming (ABB ARLA/RAPID, URScript) of physical automation equipment, tooling and sensors, as well as simulation and emulation (ABB Robotstudio, Simumatik, Codesys) of industrial robots and PLCs for different student groups. Subject reviewing and supervision of degree projects within the subject area are also included.
  • Follow developments within the subject area and the development of society in general that is important for the work at the university.
  • The position will include responsibility for contacting and booking of external study visits and guest lectures from industrial companies, as well as representation through demonstrations and presentations of our activities within the subject area. The position may include responsibility for lab supervisors and amanuensis involved in the teaching.
  • An important part of the position will be to take responsibility for the operation, maintenance and development of the robot labs available at the division, with regards both to education and to research. Connected to this, the position also includes to take part in and contribute to the research conduced within the subject area.

Qualifications Required:

  • Higher-education degree including subject specialization within electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, robot technology, engineering physics or corresponding.
  • Teaching Expertise. It is necessary that the pedagogical skills and subject specialization are relevant to the content of the employment and the tasks that will be included in the employment.
  • Applicants also must have completed teacher training of relevance to operations at the University, comprising ten weeks, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. If special circumstances apply, this training for teachers in higher education may be completed during the first year of employment.
  • Documented ability to teach in Swedish and English is a requirement unless special reasons prevail.
  • Personal capabilities necessary to carry out fully the duties of the appointment include responsibility, dedication and a strong ability to convert theory to practise, as well as very good collaboration and communication skills with respect to colleagues and students. 

Assessment Criteria/Ranking of applicants that fulfil the above-mentioned qualifications required

The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on subject specialization and teaching expertise of which weight will be primarily given to teaching expertise.

 Subject Specialization may refer to in- depth study of the subject, for example a PhD, will be afforded consideration. In addition to academic qualifications, experience from other activities, including technology development, may also be taken into account.

Teaching Expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. This expertise can have been achieved outside the academy through supervision, internal training, mentoring programs, etc. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. In assessing teaching expertise special weight will be attached to merits in teaching within the subject area and duties described above for the position. Experience from lab exercise teaching is a requirement. Experience from pedagogical development, in particular complemented with scientific publication, is considered a merit.

Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise.

All merits must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both quality and scope.

In filling this position the university aims to appoint the applicant who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of her/his competence and expertise, is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.
