Uppsala University, Department of Organismal Biology

Position (researcher)
Are you interested in working with organismal biology, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a researcher position at Uppsala University.

The Petroutsos Lab at Uppsala University is investigating how CO2 acts as substrate for photosynthesis and as signaling molecule in conjunction with light to control cellular homeostasis in microalgae. We are combining genetic, molecular, biochemical, physiological and mathematical modelling approaches to identify factors regulating CO2 capture and partitioning. The lab is looking for a dynamic, self- motivated, team-oriented researcher to support wet lab efforts in understanding molecular mechanisms controlling acclimation of the model microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to changing CO2 and light availability. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with the head of the lab and the team members involved in the project and will also assist in setting up the new lab and in project management.

Duties

  • Preparation and implementation of Chlamydomonas culture experiments.
  • Sample collection and analysis: preparation of protein extracts, Western blot, preparation of DNA/ RNA extracts, PCR, genotyping, RT-qPCR.
  • Transgenesis and phenotypic analysis of Chlamydomonas mutants.
  • Measuring in vivo photosynthesis and photosynthetic oxygen evolution
  • Record, process, format and communicate results of guaranteed quality.
  • Present experimental data at team meetings.
  • Assist in peer- and student-mentorship.

Requirements

PhD degree in Biology or Chemistry or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in the same area. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment.

Extensive knowledge and experience of modern molecular biology and biochemistry tools, including PCR, cloning, protein, DNA and RNA extraction. Excellent knowledge and experience on Chlamydomonas biology and physiology including in vivo measurements of photosynthesis.

We will put an emphasis in your personal qualities such as:

  • Team player
  • Ability to adapt to new techniques
  • Taste and motivation for technical work at the bench
  • Ability to carry out accurate work
  • Dynamic, organized, self-reliant

Applications must include a CV, a covering letter and the contact details of 2 people willing to provide a reference letter.
