Uppsala University, Department of Electrical Engineering

Electrification, digitalisation and health technology are among the largest areas for the future in the conversion to sustainable societies. The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts successful research and education in the areas - renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, industrial IoT, 6G communication and wireless sensor networks as well as smart electronic sensors and medical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international workplace with around 160 employees that all contribute to important technical energy and health solutions at the Ångström Laboratory.

The employment will be placed at the Division of Solid-State Electronics, Department of Electrical Engineering. The employment is valid for two years.

Project description
The goal of the project is to perform electrochemical characterization of high voltage DC (HVDC) transformer oil to understand the types and concentrations of different ionic species and to develop a model that explains bulk and interfacial charge transport. The project will aim to first build an electrochemical setup to study the current-voltage (CV) behavior of transformer oil and then characterize different types of oils including the biodegradable oils. A particular focus will be to understand the generation, behavior and concentration of various ionic species such as redox couples at the solid-liquid interface. A separate focus of the project is to characterize lipid nanostructures using atomic force and fluorescence microscopy.

Duties

  • Build an electrochemical setup and study the current-voltage (CV) behavior of different types of transformer oil.
  • Identify the ionic species responsible for current conduction
  • Develop a model to explain bulk and interfacial charge transport
  • Characterize lipid nanostructures using atomic force and fluorescence microscopy

Requirements

  •  The applicant must hold a Swedish doctoral degree in condensed matter physics or electrical engineering with a focus on semiconductor components and electronics, or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent.
  •  Good oral and written proficiency in English.

Additional qualifications

  • Experience, supported by scientific publications, of electrochemical/electrokinetic methods and microfabrication.

We put an emphasis on your personal qualities such as good collaboration and communication skills with other researchers. You should be purposeful, structured and able to work effectively both individually and in groups.
