Postdoctoral position in Hierarchical Federated Learning for 6G Edge Computing

Electrification and digitalisation are among the largest areas for the future in the conversion to sustainable societies. The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts successful research and education in these areas - renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, industrial IoT, 5G/6G communication, machine learning and wireless sensor networks as well as smart electronic sensors and biomedical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international workplace with around 10 employees that all contribute to important technical energy and health challenges at the Ångström Laboratory.

The position will be at the Division of Signals and Systems, the Division of Networked Embedded Systems, or the Division of Electricity at the Department of Electrical Engineering. Here you will find a stimulating work environment with many interesting projects. The Department of Electrical Engineering collaborates with Swedish companies as well as the public sector. We are looking forward to your application. Join us and build the future together with us!

Project description

As 6G networks enable deployments of large-scale, massive IoT and advanced AI-driven
applications, optimizing resource utilization becomes critical. Therefore, it is necessary to develop mechanisms that can accommodate the diverse and dynamic nature of 6G-connected devices while efficiently performing machine learning. In this project, we develop a hierarchical federated learning scheme that enables seamless integration and effective participation across a wide range of devices with various resource constraints. This will allow devices—from small-scale IoT sensors to powerful mobile units—to contribute meaningfully to the learning process.

Duties

The main duties are to conduct research in the project. The tasks include design, implementation and analysis of solutions as well as publication of the research results at conferences and in journals. The duties may also include teaching (max. 20 %).

Requirements

  • The applicant must hold a Ph.D. degree or a foreign degree equivalent ot a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, engineering physics, or computer science. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a Ph.D. degree no more than three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. Due to special circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, or duties in labour unions, the degree may have been obtained earlier.
  • Experience in at least one of the following or related areas: federated learning, wireless communication, edge computing.
  • Experience in programming for machine learning.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

We emphasise personal qualities such as good collaboration and communication skills with other researchers and research groups. You should be purposeful, structured, and able to work effectively both individually and in groups.

Additional qualifications

  • A good publication list.
