Senior Lecturer in English with specialization in English linguistics
The Department of English contains five areas of specialization in both teaching and research: English Linguistics, English Literature, American Literature, Irish language and Culture and SINAS, the Swedish Institute for North American Studies. The department has around 1,500 students per year and offers approximately 60 different courses at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. We are now recruiting a senior lecturer in English with specialization in English linguistics for a permanent position.
Subject: English with specialization in English linguistics
Duties
Teaching, supervision and examination as well as research and administrative duties. To a great extent, teaching will concern courses within programmes for future teachers, but also other tasks, such as teaching language structure, linguistics and language proficiency. Supervision and examination of essays at various levels will be included, as will course development and administration. The person appointed to the position will be expected to participate actively in the department’s research and seminar activities and to apply for external research funding. Keeping up with the development of the subject and societal developments that may impact the subject and the university is also considered a work duty.
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates who have obtained a PhD, or have the equivalent competence, and who have demonstrated pedagogical competence are eligible for the position of Senior Lecturer.
Candidates must have completed training in tertiary-level teaching of no less than ten weeks or obtained equivalent competence. In special circumstances, the training can be carried out during the first two years of employment. To qualify as a supervisor of doctoral students, the candidate’s pedagogical training must include postgraduate supervisor training.
For the present position, candidates are required to have obtained a PhD in English or another relevant subject, such as general linguistics. Also required is the documented ability to teach in English and to use Swedish as a working language, as well as documented familiarity with all levels of the Swedish educational system, from primary school to university.
It is required that the candidate’s academic competence, pedagogical competence and professional skills are relevant to the duties and subject of the position. The applicant must have the personal qualities required to fit the position well. In this case, such personal qualities are flexibility, a good ability to work together with colleagues and a sense of responsibility.
Assessment criteria for candidates who meet the eligibility requirements:
In the selection among eligible candidates, pedagogical competence in the subject area will be accorded special significance.
Equal care will be taken in the examination of academic and pedagogical competence.
Academic competence refers to research qualifications. When assessing academic competence, primarily research quality will be taken into account. The scope of the research, mainly depth and breadth, will also be accorded significance. In the assessment of academic competence, special weight will be accorded research qualifications regarding English language didactics and the acquisition of English as a second language.
Additionally, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education at the doctoral level, as well as the ability to attract funding for research in competition with other researchers will be accorded significance. The documented ability to interact within the academic community as well as with the local community will be accorded significance.
Pedagogical competence refers to educational and teaching qualifications. In the assessment of pedagogical competence, primarily pedagogical quality will be considered. Scope, breadth as well as depth, will also be accorded significance. In the assessment of pedagogical competence, special weight will be accorded experience of educating future teachers, experience of teaching in Swedish primary and secondary school, and a degree that qualifies the candidate for teaching. Documented experience of pedagogical development work relevant to teacher education will also be accorded special weight.
Additionally, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop teaching, as well as the ability to link research in the subject to teaching, subject-specific didactics and higher education pedagogy will be accorded significance. The ability to interact on higher education pedagogical issues with parties within and outside the university will also be considered pedagogical competence.
Administrative competence and leadership skills are important to the position and will be accorded significance. Administrative competence may be demonstrated by, for instance, the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in an efficient and purpose-adapted manner, as well as through the ability to establish and keep to a time plan. Competence includes overall planning and the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects relevant priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner and based on an awareness of relevant goals and quality expectations.
Leadership skills are demonstrated by the ability to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility and motivate and provide others with the conditions required to achieve common goals effectively. The ability to coordinate a group as well as to generate commitment, participation and job satisfaction, and the ability to manage conflicts are further examples of demonstrated competence.
All qualifications must be documented in a way that makes it possible to assess their quality and scope.
