The Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering consists of three divisions: Quality Science, Industrial Engineering and Management and Civil Engineering and Built Environment. The department has approximately 100 employees and has its research and education both at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. USER - Uppsala Smart Energy Research group - is highly interdisciplinary and combines applied and theoretical, as well as qualitative and quantitative, approaches. The research group is involved in extensive collaborations with the industry and other universities, including the networks that the strategic research area “STandUP for Energy” and the program “Resistance and effect – about smart electricity grids for the many people” include. The focus of the research is the role of users in the transition to a more sustainable energy system, often with a particular focus on smart electricity grids, demand flexibility, control instruments and flexibility markets. Duties
The tasks mainly include research and up to 20 percent teaching. This means that you, as one of the doctoral members of USER, contribute to the implementation and development of the research and teaching that is conducted in the area of users’ role in the transition to a sustainable energy system. The work includes, among other things to

  • initiate, lead and contribute to all steps in the research process, including applications to external funders, planning and design of studies, formulation of research questions, qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis as well as writing scientific articles and reports,
  • supervise students in undergraduate education,
  • contribute to the development of the subject area via participation in internal and external seminars, workshops and conferences as well as
  • contribute to the administration that the above entails.

Requirements
PhD degree in Industrial Engineering and Management or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Industrial Engineering and Management. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Experience with and knowledge of quantitative and interdisciplinary research methods as well as good knowledge of statistical methods and programming. A good understanding of the energy system, the electricity market and its actors, as well as very good knowledge of spoken and written English and some knowledge of spoken and written Swedish (B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language skills).

Additional qualifications
Meritorious is proficiency in R and/or Python, machine learning and data analytics as well as strong mathematical/statistical skills. So is oral and written communication and presentation skills.

The employment is a temporary position of 3 years according to central collective agreement. Full time position. Starting date: as soon as possible. Placement: Uppsala
