Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Temporary full-time position for 3 months, starting as soon as possible or by agreement

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering aims to be an environment for successful and valuable research and education with a focus on materials science solutions for important societal challenges. Our department is an exciting workplace with research in a broad technology-related area, from basic research to large-scale applied research, and with close contacts with students through the department's involvement in engineering and master's programs. Our research and teaching are conducted within seven divisions with different research focus.

Project Description
The magnetism group within the Solid State Physics division deals with basic and applied experimental research on magnetic materials. For example, a striking class of materials, so-called quasicristals, are being investigated. The advertised position is tied to project “Functional Quasicrystals? Harnessing the complexity of aperiodic intermetallic compounds” (FuncQC) financed by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg  Foundation, which deals with the design, synthesis, and structural and physical (e.g. electrical, magnetic) properties of these materials.

Duties
Participation in the ongoing project and activities related to quasicrystals and approximant crystals. The research to be performed involves the collection of magnetic data and the analysis of structural, magnetic, electrical and heat capacity data. The research activities will be carried out in close collaboration with the Departments of Chemistry from Uppsala University, as well as co-workers from Stockholm University and KTH.

In addition to research, the position implies the communication of results in the form of scientific articles and presentation during project meetings.

Qualification requirements
Ph.D. in Solid State Physics or equivalent, with specialization in  Condensed Matter Physics and Magnetism.

Advanced knowledge about the specific structural properties of quasicrystals and approximant crystals is required. First-rate experimental skills concerning the study of the magnetic properties of quasicrystals and approximant crystals using SQUID magnetometry are required. Proficiency in the study and analysis of spin glass phases in quasicrystals and approximants is also required. The position also implies experience with the analysis of structural, magnetic, electric, and thermal data (X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, magnetoresistance, Hall effect, heat capacity) of quasicrystals and  approximant crystals.

Personal qualities, such as the ability to lead and manage projects while also being able to interact with other researchers, are very important. The applicant must be determined, organized, and able to work effectively both individually and in a group. Significant emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

We require very good oral and written skills in English, as well as very good skills in writing scientific publications.

Your application must include

1) A short letter of description of yourself, why are you interested in joining this project, and why you are suitable for this position
2) CV (maximum 2 pages)
3) Publication list. Mark the most relevant publications for the position and comment your contribution to those publications.
4) Names and contact details of at least two reference persons who have accepted to be references for you. It must also be stated what relationship you have had with the respective referent.

During the application period, we will continuously read application documents and call for interviews
