Postdoctoral position in modelling of 2D materials with special focus on defect engineering
Are you interested in working with theory and modelling, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe and favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a Postdoctor position at Uppsala University.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of Uppsala University's largest with almost 400 employees. The Department conducts world-class research and education in both theoretical and experimental physics and has extensive collaboration with the outside world. The research we conduct covers everything from the unimaginably small to the large in areas such as energy supply, climate change, new materials and the universe. Our work is also reflected in the department's courses and educational programs. Every year, about 2500 students take courses at first and second cycle level at the department. The postdoctor position is allocated to the Light-matter interaction group at the Division of X-ray Photon Science. The work in the group is broadly played with many current issues in materials science and biomolecular science, as well as in X-ray Physics, where collaboration with experimentalists is always a priority. The division has a number of research specializations in materials, energy, biochemistry, ultrafast processes with a strong focus on measurements in the X-ray field and on the use of synchrotron light facilities and free-electron lasers. In most of these activities, theory and modelling are important parts. The work environment is flexible, inclusive and always welcomes your own creative ideas and initiatives.
Duties
At the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Division of X-ray Photon Science, intensive research is conducted in modern materials with energy relevance. The activity in this research area consists of many specializations, ranging from studies of fundamental physical and photophysical processes, material properties to design and component manufacturing. The current project is based on the latest advances in 2-dimensional materials, in particular MXenes and dichalcogenides, often with outstanding electronic, optical or magnetic properties and which can be used in a number of application areas, e.g. in space technology. A problem, but in some applications also an asset, is the appearance of defects that can radically change the properties of the materials. The task of the project includes theoretical studies of the conditions for the occurrence of defects, to determine their impact on the application of the materials, and to optimize the materials with respect to such defects. This research can advantageously be carried out in collaboration with experimental synthesis and characterization of the materials. The candidate is part of Ågren's research group and the work includes presenting results and participating in follow-up planning.
Requirements
PhD degree in Physics or Chemistry or Materials Science or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in these subjects. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
