Uppsala University, Department of Ecology and Genetics

A PhD student position in Limnology, with focus on greenhouse gas dynamics in littoral zones of inland waters, is available at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, Limnology.

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se.

The Limnology Program at the Department of Ecology and Genetics (www.ieg.uu.se/limnology) is, together with its field station at the lake Erken (www.ieg.uu.se/erkenlaboratoriet), an internationally renowned environment for research, education and outreach on the ecology of inland waters.

Project description: Inland waters have a strong effect on climate because they emit greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, and store carbon in their sediments. Inland waters are fringed with belts of aquatic plants in littoral areas, but despite their high productivity and carbon turnover, littoral areas are not considered in current conceptualizations of the inland water carbon cycle. This PhD project aims to investigate the greenhouse gas dynamics in inland water littorals to better quantify their contribution to inland water and continental carbon cycling.

Duties
Your duties include research and coursework within the project’s subject area. You will study greenhouse gas dynamics in littoral zones, from the plant to the site scale with in situ measurements of greenhouse gas emissions. The work will also include a modelling part to assess the contribution of littorals to pelagic greenhouse gas emissions. The PhD education in Sweden lasts 4 years, with corresponding to 3 years for research, and 1 year of studying relevant courses. In addition, we encourage PhD candidates to teach on relevant undergraduate courses, which adds additional time to their contracts.

Qualifications required
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must
hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in Limnology, Ecology, Biogeochemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or another relevant field, or

  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way. Other qualifications and characteristics required for the position are:
  • Experience and knowledge within one or several of the following fields: limnology, biogeochemistry.
  • Driving license for car (EU class B)

We attach great importance to personal qualities such as ability to collaborate within a team, organizational skills, and independence.

Candidates must be able to express themselves very well in English, both orally and in writing.

Qualifications desired
Experience in statistics and programming (e.g. using the R software), as well as in geographical information systems (GIS) is meriting. Experience in conducting field work is meriting.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
