Project description:
A PhD position is available in the Pharmacometrics Research Group at the Department of Pharmacy with a focus on pharmacometric methods to demonstrate treatment effectiveness in very small clinical trials. The doctoral position is part of a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) "doctoral network" called Medicines Made to Measure (MMM), which offers an innovative doctoral training program for several young researchers at nine different European universities. MMM aims to go beyond the latest genetic medicine approaches and establish the field of single-patient tailored antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) treatments for individuals with nano-rare RD mutations, patients currently excluded from benefiting of current medical breakthroughs. Specifically, MMM aims to develop core modules in a new "out-of-the-box", yet EMA-advised treatment development pathway for single patients with nano-rare mutations - from omics-based therapy, via preclinical target validation to innovative trial methodology and a pioneering ethical framework for individualized genetic therapies. Central to the research and training programs for doctoral students is quantitative modeling that can integrate information from several different saturation sources to demonstrate the effectiveness of an ASO treatment in very small ("n of one") clinical trials. These models and methods will be developed based on pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic (pharmacometric) principles.
Duties The holder of a doctoral position must primarily focus on research studies. Other tasks at the institution, for example administration and teaching can be included to one level not exceeding 20% of the working time.
Qualification requirements: A suitable background is a master’s degree from the pharmacy program, master's degree in pharmaceutical science or technical physics, master's degree in pharmaceutical modeling, statistics or applied mathematics education, or other similar education including courses in Modeling and Programming (e.g. in R) (at least 240 credits).
We attach great importance to personal suitability as well as motivation and experience in research in pharmacometrics. Experience with statistical programs such as NONMEM and R is essential. Research experience in clinical trials, registry data or rare diseases is valuable. Applicants must be able to express themselves well, both orally and in writing, in English. The applicant must have good collaboration skills as the project involves collaboration between different research groups and two exchange periods (1-6 months each) at other universities, regulatory authorities and/or companies. Furthermore, the applicant must have demonstrated skill in conducting a scientific project in a structured and methodical manner. In accordance with the requirements of the financier for this position, the applicant cannot have lived, studied or worked in Sweden for more than 12 months during the last 3-year period at the start date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
