Project description
Governmental policies have been developed in several countries aiming to decarbonize the power generation and the transport sector. Most of the Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), including generation, batteries and electric vehicle charging are connected to the electricity grid through power electronics.
The main idea of this project is to use dynamic simulation to investigate the impact on the power grid caused by Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) - such as Electric Vehicles, and suggest control techniques to minimise the problems, which can be verified and validated by using real time simulation/control in the loop simulation. The simulation seeks to reproduce the user's consumption profile, stipulating an analysis of the results considering a massive insertion of electric vehicles in the electrical grid (at medium and low voltage levels).
Furthermore, the study of storage systems is strategic when contemplating a network with several electric vehicles and different forms of renewable energy generation. Due to the uncertainty and variation of renewable energy sources (RESs), the optimization of the stationary energy storage systems are required and indispensable for the future of the current energy matrix to reduce the fluctuation of RESs.
The research group at Uppsala University has extensive experience of research in power systems and a large laboratory activity. We have an exciting work environment designed by the doctoral student and the research team together. The doctoral student will be supervised by at least two supervisors.
Duties
From the research project viewpoint, the doctoral student together with the research team will work on the modelling and simulation of the system, in order to investigate the impacts of a high DERs penetration in the electrical grid. The challenges include analyzing the results from the point of view of undervoltage and overvoltage levels, transformer loading, conductor loading, technical losses and estimate the joint hosting capacity of PV solar penetration and electric vehicles in real distribution networks.
The main task of a doctoral student is to devote to doctoral education, which includes both participation in research projects and doctoral education courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties to a maximum extent of 20 % of his/her time.
