Uppsala University, Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics conducts research and provides education at undergraduate and graduate levels in mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. The number of employees is 130, including 40 PhD students. The Department has three research programs: analysis and probability, algebra and geometry, applied mathematics and statistics. To read more please visit the department ́s webpage.

The Department is now looking for a PhD student in mathematics, supported by WASP (Wallenberg AI Autonomous Systems and Software Program), to work on the project "Machine Learning Non-Euclidean Geometry". WASP is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems. The vision of WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish industry. Read more on WASP’s webpage.

The successful candidate will work in the group of Geometry and Physics, which belongs to the research program of algebra and geometry. This group has close ties to the Theoretical Physics group at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The research in this environment focuses on mathematical physics, mathematical relativity theory and symplectic geometry. The PhD student will undertake a research project at the intersection of mathematics, theoretical physics and computer science, with focus on the use of machine learning in string theory and geometry. The project will be supervised by associate professor Magdalena Larfors, and will be in collaboration with Chalmers university and will be part of the WASP Graduate School.

The graduate school within WASP is dedicated to provide the skills needed to analyze, develop, and contribute to the interdisciplinary area of artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software. Through an ambitious program with research visits, partner universities, and visiting lecturers, the graduate school actively supports forming a strong multi-disciplinary and international professional network between PhD-students, researchers and industry. Read more about the graduate school here.

Duties
The duties of a PhD student are primarily directed at their own research education, which lasts for four years. The work may also involve, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), other departmental duties, mainly related to teaching undergraduate courses – in which case the position may be extended to maximum five years. The research is focused on the analysis of high-dimensional non-Euclidean geometry, such as Calabi-Yau geometries, by using tools from machine learning and mathematical physics. The PhD student is expected to carry out original research in this field and publish results in peer-reviewed research journals. The student will follow the curriculum of the WASP Graduate School, and will also contribute to the academic activities of the research group by participating in seminars and similar interactions.

Requirements
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

  • hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in mathematics, theoretical or mathematical physics, or
  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education in mathematics, theoretical or mathematical physics, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

The prospective student should have an excellent academic track-record, solid communication skills in English, and demonstrated potential for academic research.

Additional qualifications
A strong background in mathematics (algebraic, symplectic or differential geometry) or mathematical physics (string theory, particle theory, supersymmetry) is desirable. Experience and knowledge of data science (machine learning, autonomous systems) is considered an advantage.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
