The post-doctoral positions are offered by the department’s Division of Computer Systems, which conducts world-leading research on a wide range of topics related to the engineering of future computers and computer systems. The division has around 55 employees, including 10 professors, 6 university lecturers, 12 researchers and post-docs, and 25 PhD students.

Duties and subject area:  The Division of Computer Systems seeks to strengthen its core research activities through the recruitment of up to five promising postdocs. The division’s research includes modeling, design, and analysis of new computer architectures, new methods in computer communication, and new techniques in embedded and real-time systems. In all those areas, the division has produced groundbreaking theoretical and applied results. This call is open to applicants across any of the research fields within the division.

Each post-doc will be placed in one of the research groups in the division, but we are particularly interested in applicants who can span multiple groups through collaborative projects.

Relevant research groups and projects are:

• Embedded and real-time systems, in particular design, analysis, verification, and programming of safety-critical systems that allow dynamic updates, and real-time scheduling for multiprocessor systems;
• Acceleration of domain-specific workloads (e.g., scientific computing, databases, ML, etc.);
• Algorithmic verification, in particular verification and testing of concurrent programs;
• Application of machine learning to computer systems and computer networks;
• Communications research, in particular backscatter communication and battery-free communication;
• Computer architecture, in particular microarchitecture, security, network-on-chip, hardware/software co-design, and memory systems and the integration of programmable capabilities into caches, prefetchers, and coherence;
• Cyber-physical systems, in particular focus on challenges related to interoperability, sustainability, autonomy and intelligence;
• Security, in particular security of networked embedded IoT systems and applications, and techniques for software security including verification and testing;
• Persistence in extremely low-power embedded IoT systems, including intermittently computing devices using energy harvesting.

The positions will be held for two years and will include research and a limited amount (max 20%) of teaching.

Requirements
PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Additional qualifications
High-quality publications in international peer-reviewed journals or conferences are expected. The applicant should be highly motivated, able to work well in a diverse group, comfortable giving and receiving constructive criticism, and have strong abilities for critical thinking and structured work.

Assessment Criteria/Ranking:

The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research expertise. In filling this position the University aims to appoint the applicant who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of her/his competence and expertise is judged to have the best potential to carry out the relevant duties and to contribute to the advancement of research at the Division of Computer Systems.

In the overall assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, parental leave, part-time work relating to care of children, union assignments, military service, or the like are to be regarded as work experience, and should be listed as merits in the application.

Application: The application should include a statement (at most 2 pages) of the applicant’s motivation for applying for this position, including the applicant’s qualifications and research interests, a description of the applicant’s PhD thesis, and a description how the applicant’s background is a good fit for the research groups the applicant wants to work in; it should emphasize in particular cross-group collaborations an applicant can participate in. The application must include a CV, degrees and grades (translated to English or Swedish), a web reference to the PhD thesis, a complete list of publications with up to five important publications for the position highlighted and the candidate’s own contributions to those five publication described, other relevant documents, and the earliest possible starting date. Applications should be accompanied by two letters of recommendation.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of two years according to central collective agreement.  Scope of employment 100 %. Starting as soon as possible or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
