Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of Uppsala University's largest departments, with around 400 employees, of which about 125 are doctoral students. The department conducts world-class research and education in both theoretical and experimental physics and has extensive collaboration with the outside world. The research is carried out at 10 research divisions and touches on everything from the incredibly small to the extremely large in, for example, energy supply, climate development, new materials, and the universe. This whole spectrum of research is also reflected in the department's courses and educational programs. Every year, around 2.500 students study courses at bachelor’s and master’s level at the department. Read more at www.physics.uu.se.

The position is within the Division of Materials Theory, which offers a world-class environment for quantum matter theory and materials theory research, with interests spanning from strongly correlated and topological states of matter and quantum information, to atomistic spin simulations and first-principles calculations of a very broad range of functional materials. The division currently consists of approximately 90 researchers, of which about a third are Ph.D. students. The project belongs to the research group of Professor Annica Black-Schaffer, currently consisting of eight Ph.D. students and postdocs. More information cna be found at the group’s website: materials-theory.physics.uu.se/blackschaffer.

Duties
We would like to recruit an ambitious postdoc in quantum matter theory focusing on unconventional and topological superconductivity. One primary goal is to find and charactize new topological and unconventional superconductors in materials with a flat band dispersion. Flat bands near the Fermi level make makterials very sensitive to a transition to an order phase, where superconductivity is a real possibility. An extension towards theory for non-Hermitian phenomena, induced through disorder, dissipation, or strong interactions is planned. The work involves both analytical and numerical work.

Requirements
PhD degree in physics or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in physics. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. The applicant should have a strong background in many-body theory. Fluency in both written and spoken English is an absolute prerequisite.

Additional qualifications
We would like to recruit a conscientious person who has already demonstrated indpenedence in research, but at the same time works well in a research group and has previous experience with supervision of students. Weight will therefore be given to qualities such as independence, a positive attitude, and good collaboration skills. Special weight will also be giving to earlier research experience on unconventional or topological superconductivity and non-Hermitian physics, as well as experience with both analytical and numerical work.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of two years and at most three years according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date 15 October or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.

For further information about the position, please contact: Professor Annica Black-Schaffer, e-mail: annica.black-schaffer@physics.uu.se, phone: +46 76 795 06 49.

Please submit your application by 7 April 2023, UFV-PA 2023/1071.
