Uppsala University, Department of Modern Languages

The Department of Modern Languages has ca 70 employees who conduct research and education at the first-cycle, second-cycle and third-cycle levels within a number of languages and literatures. We have more than 150 courses and educate around 3,000 students per year. Research and teaching within both linguistics and literature are undertaken for the majority of our languages. Within the subject area of the Polish and Slavic languages, courses are given in language proficiency, linguistics and literature. The department also gives a course in mother tongue tuition in Polish. The courses are given as freestanding courses and within the framework of two programmes: the Bachelor’s Programme in Languages and the Master’s Programme in Languages. Third-cycle education is given in Slavic languages, with specialisation in linguistics or literature. More information about the department's activities can be found on http://www.moderna.uu.se/

Duties
Teaching, supervision and examination at first-cycle, second-cycle and third-cycle levels as well as research and administration. Course coordination and course administration are included within teaching. The teaching, which is primarily IT-based, can include course components within language proficiency, translation, linguistics, literature and cultural studies as well as mother tongue tuition. Duties also entail that the applicant is active in applying for external research funding and keeps up to date with developments within the subject area.

Qualifications
The qualification requirements for employment as a senior lecturer are fulfilled by a person who has been awarded a PhD in a relevant field or has corresponding research competence, and has demonstrated teaching expertise.

A prerequisite for considering that the applicant has teaching expertise is that the applicant has completed at least ten weeks of teacher training for higher education that is relevant to the organisation and its activities or has equivalent knowledge. If there are special reasons, the teacher training for higher education may be undertaken during the first two years of employment. To qualify as a supervisor of doctoral students, the candidate’s pedagogical training must include postgraduate supervisor training.

The ability to teach in both Polish and Swedish is a requirement.

It is a requirement that the scientific expertise, the teaching expertise and the professional expertise are relevant for the position’s subject area and the duties that the position entails. The applicant must have the personal characteristics necessary to perform the duties of the position well. Such personal characteristics are flexibility, cooperative skills and the ability to take responsibility.

Assessment criteria for candidates who meet the eligibility requirements
When selecting a candidate from the qualified applicants, scientific expertise and teaching expertise will be judged equally.

In the evaluation of scientific expertise, research merits within the subject of Polish linguistics or contrastive linguistics including Polish, are of particular importance. Further, consideration will be taken to the depth and breadth of the research including other areas of Polish language studies. Experience of initiating research and working cooperatively within research projects is a merit. Even obtaining external research funding, leading scientific assignments and an established position within the international research community are of importance.

In assessing teaching expertise, teaching quality is the primary consideration. Even the scope of the teaching, with regards to depth and breadth at different levels, will be taken into consideration. Further, consideration will be given to the applicant’s capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, in particular distance-learning, as well as the ability to base teaching on research. In assessing teaching expertise significant consideration will be given to digital competency and experience of IT-based teaching. Further, consideration will also be given to the applicant’s ability to collaborate with other parties, both within the University and externally, regarding higher education teaching issues. Teaching expertise must be well documented so that both scope and quality can be assessed.

Basis of assessment, other expertise
Administrative expertise is of significance for the position and will be weighted accordingly. Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, by the ability to plan, organise and prioritise work in an efficient and appropriate manner along with the ability to specify and keep to timeframes. Such expertise includes overall operational planning, the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner based on awareness of goals and quality.

When appointing this position the University will select the applicant who, following a qualitative overall assessment of competence and expertise, is judged to have the best potential, as an active co-worker and with their presence at the department, to perform and develop the relevant duties and to contribute to the positive development of the department.

Parental leave, part-time work owing to caring for children, union work, military service or similar activities are considered work experience and should be included in the applicant’s CV.
