Uppsala University, Department of Electrical Engineering

Electrification and digitalisation are among the largest areas for the future in the conversion to sustainable societies. The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts successful research and education in the areas - renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, industrial IoT, 5G/6G communication and wireless sensor networks as well as smart electronic sensors and medical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international workplace with around 130 employees that all contribute to important technical energy and health challenges at the Ångström Laboratory.

The position will be at the division of Networked Embedded Systems, at the Department of Electrical Engineering.

The objective of the Division of Networked Embedded Systems is to network all kinds of objects from the tiniest sensors and actuators to full-fledged devices such as mobile robots in a reliable, secure and efficient way. One of our main interests is the battery-free Internet of Things: we work with technologies such as intermittent computing and power-efficient backscatter to enable battery-free IoT devices. A recent effort is to network devices implanted in the human body using radio-frequency communication through human fat tissue.

We perform systems research, i.e., we work with real prototype systems. We publish at top tier conferences such as IEEE/ACM IPSN, ACM SenSys, ACM MobiSys, ACM MobiCom and EWSN as well as top journals.

Duties
Within the context of an exciting project on battery-free Internet of Things, we are working together with the Microwaves in Medical Engineering Group (MMG) on novel applications such as dexterous prosthetic hands and small-scale vascular robots. While the MMG concentrates on the biomechatronic and actuation challenges, the main focus of this PhD project is the embedded system software and its co-design with the underlying embedded hardware. This includes the design of communication protocols on top of the physical layer communication through human fat tissue, power management, embedded intelligence, and scheduling. The work will be conducted in a leading interdisciplinary environment, where close contacts with researchers from other disciplines as well as future users in clinical medicine and performance enhancement in sports is a prerequisite for success.
The work duties also include teaching and other departmental duties, for a fraction of time that does not exceed 20%.

We have an exciting work environment designed by the doctoral student and the research team together. The doctoral student will be supervised by at least two supervisors. The Department of Electrical Engineering also offers a salary supplement to employed doctoral students.

Requirements
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies at the division Networked Embedded Systems is the one that has:

  • hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in electrical engineering or computer science, or
  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.
  • good communication skills with sufficient proficiency in oral and written English, as well as very good study results;
  • proficiency in low-level programming, preferably in embedded C and/or Rust;
  • a strong interest in networking, hardware and electronics, machine learning as well as security;
  • personal characteristics, such as a high level of creativity, thoroughness, and/or a structured approach to problem-solving.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
