Uppsala University, Department of History of Science and Ideas

The Centre for Medical Humanities (CMH) is an interdisciplinary unit that conducts and promotes research, education and multidisciplinary dialogue between the humanities, social sciences, medicine, pharmacy, and health sciences. CMH is organizationally located at the Department of History of Science and Ideas. For more information about CMH, see: https://www.idehist.uu.se/centrum-for-medicinsk-humaniora/

Medical humanities is a multidisciplinary field where questions related to medicine, disease and health are placed in a historical, cultural and social context. It includes, among other things, studies of individual experiences of illness and health, the development of medical practices and societal and cultural perspectives on health care. CMH brings together a broad network of researchers in the humanities, social sciences, medicine and pharmacy. We coordinate interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange between the different knowledge traditions that characterize these scientific domains. CMH's public activities consist of lectures, symposia, workshops and seminars, where researchers, practitioners and the public can meet and discuss issues within our area of interest. We also carry out educational development, both of independent courses and as part of the medical education at Uppsala University.

In the autumn of 2023, CMH will start an artist-in-residence program, which means that we invite artists to be part of the environment at CMH for one semester. This is a step in promoting and bringing in artistic perspectives on medicine, pharmacy and healthcare, as well as the societal and cultural issues that relate to them. The aim is to establish forms for exchanging experience and knowledge between artists, researchers, and students, thereby broadening the perspectives with which we can investigate and understand phenomena and processes related to medicine in culture and society.
