The Department of Surgical Sciences (IKV) is part of the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy. Teaching is, among other areas, conducted within the education programmes for doctors, nurses and specialty nurses. Many of the department's employees have combined positions at the University Hospital.

Experimental, clinical and epidemiological research is conducted at the unit for orthopedics (https://www.surgsci.uu.se/Forskning/forskningsomraden/Ortopedi/) and our translational research is located at OrthoLab. Within the framework of a VR project that pertains to preventing early complications after hip replacement surgery (2021-00980) and is focusing on producing and evaluating metallic or resorbable bone substitutes.
