Uppsala University, Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics conducts research and provides education at undergraduate and graduate levels in mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. The number of employees is 130, including 40 PhD students. The Department has three research programs: analysis and probability, algebra and geometry, applied mathematics and statistics. A position is available in the department of mathematics, to work with Fiona Skerman. Possible research topics include random graphs, inference on networks, average-case complexity and structural graph theory. A background in probability and / or combinatorics would be an advantage. The position is funded by a WASP NEST grant and there will be opportunities for collaborations within this group: Alexandre Proutiere (KTH), Anders Rantzer (Lund University), Emma Tegling (Lund University).

Duties
The duties of a PhD student are primarily directed at their own research education, which lasts for four years. The work may also involve, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), other departmental duties, mainly related to teaching undergraduate courses – in which case the position may be extended to maximum five years.

Requirements
In order to be employed as doctoral student, the candidate has to be admitted to the research education program, and for this, their potential ability to pursue the program is decisive. The applicant should have a master ́s degree or equivalent which includes a bachelor degree or equivalent in mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics or at least in all likelihood obtain such a degree no later than by the date of starting the position. The candidate should have a good command of spoken and written English, knowledge of Swedish is not required.

Additional qualifications
Knowledge of probability and / or combinatorics will be an advantage.

  • A copy of the master's degree dissertation (or a preliminary outline thereof) or other written work in mathematics or related field.

The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. Salary according to local agreement for PhD students. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting Date 1 September 2023 or as agreed (earlier start date possible). Placement: Uppsala
