The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration and vascular biology. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala. The department has teaching assignments in several education programmes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and at the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 500 million, out of which more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 345 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 700 affiliated people. The unit for Molecular Tools and Functional Genomics, now recruiting a postdoc, is active at the international forefront of research to develop advanced technologies for biomedical investigations at levels of DNA, RNA and protein. Several of their earlier techniques have enjoyed broad uptake world-wide and have been successfully commercialized by licensees and by companies with a total industrial workforce of around 900, founded by present or earlier members of the lab. The present postdoctoral position is funded by a so-called proof of concept grant from the Swedish Research Council for infection diagnostics. The effective workplace of the successful applicant will be Uppsala Biomedical Center, but the project will be conducted in close collaboration with the company Rarity https://raritybioscience.com, previously spun out from the lab, and so far focusing on molecular follow-up of cancer patients. The company is located one floor below the research lab.

Duties
• Full-time research in the field of Molecular Tools, by contributing to the development of molecular techniques to diagnose infectious disease. 
• Work with techniques including oligonucleotide-assisted reactions for analysis of DNA and RNA with the aim to develop clinically valuable assays for infectious disease. 
• Supervision of master and doctoral students. Collaborate with other team members to maintain a strong, intellectually active research environment and a well-functioning lab infrastructure.
• The successful applicant will also interact with members of the company Rarity, collaborating in this project. 

Requirements
• PhD in biomedicine or similar, with advanced competence in molecular techniques and with a broad perspective on their applications. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. In case of special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

• Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.

Additional qualifications
• Experience of advanced molecular genetic techniques. 
• Insights in needs and opportunities of DNA- and RNA-based analyses of infectious disease.

About the employment
