The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 250 employees and has a turnover of 250 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website.

Duties
We are looking for a new Ph. D student to the Inorganic Chemistry Program. The research project is focused on new nanolaminated materials, synthesized both as bulk material using high temperature synthesis and as thin films from the vapor. The major aim of the project is to clarify the correlation between structure, composition and properties of the nanolaminates. The new materials will be characterized with x-ray and neutron diffraction, microscopy (SEM and TEM) and with different spectroscopic techniques such photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. An important part of the project is to produce two-dimensional (2D) layers by chemical etching of the nanolaminates. Interaction with other research groups to model and characterize the new materials is an essential part of the project. Some teaching on undergraduate courses may be a part of the position.
Requirements
Applicants should be highly motivated and interested in research in chemistry and physics as well as research on the hydrogen society. A suitable applicant has a master's degree in Materials Chemistry, Materials Physics or similar. The project involves many skills and an applicant should have a good knowledge in at least one, but preferably several, of the synthesis techniques and characterization methods to be used in the work. Examples of such skills are high temperature synthesis, magnetron sputtering, electron microscopy, crystallography, diffraction methods and electron spectroscopy. Documented proficiency in oral and written English is required. The applicant should want to work in an international and interdisciplinary research environment, and should have the social skills to work both in a team and independently
Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
Additional qualifications
Knowledge in materials modelling using e.g. DFT calculations is a merit
Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
