The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University is a strong and international research environment. The department has more than 110 employees, of which about 25 are doctoral students, 10 postdoctoral fellows, and 40 researchers, teachers and professors.

The position holder will join the laboratory of Prof. Anders Tengholm at the Department of Medical Cell Biology within Uppsala Diabetes Centre.

Duties
The hosting laboratory studies pancreatic islet cell biology and physiology with emphasis on inter- and intracellular signalling processes that control the release of insulin, glucagon and somatostatin. Insufficient secretion of insulin and dysregulated secretion of glucagon are hallmarks of diabetes but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. The focus of this project is to define the role of various signalling steps in the regulation of glucagon release from a‑cells using fluorescent biosensors, live-cell imaging techniques and kinetic measurements of hormone release.

Requirements
The applicant should have obtained a PhD in cell biology, physiology or other relevant area within the past 5 years. Proficiency in islet physiology, including isolation and perifusion of pancreatic islets as well as immunoassay detection of islet hormone secretion is a requirement. The research work will be performed in a team working with mouse models and human islets using molecular biology and advanced microscopy imaging techniques. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and take initiative to propose and perform experiments with support by Prof. Tengholm and other members of the team.

Additional qualifications
Experience live-cell fluorescence imaging is a strong advantage.

Application
Applications should contain a cover letter, curriculum vitae, including list of scientific publications, and at least two references.
