Department of Linguistics and Philology

The Department of Linguistics and Philology is involved in research and education in a number of languages and language-related subjects and provides an international work environment. The department’s activities cover many of the classical and modern languages and cultures in large areas of Europe, Asia and Africa, as well as computational and general linguistics. Education is offered at the Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.

Project description
This position is part of an international and interdisciplinary research project (Re)constructing a Bible. A new approach to unedited Biblical manuscripts as sources for the early history of the Karaim language (Acronym: KaraimBIBLE) led by Michał Németh (Jagiellonian University, Poland). The project is financed by the European Research Council (ERC).

KaraimBIBLE is a research project the main goal of which is to create a critical edition of the entire Karaim Bible based on carefully selected sources from the 15th–20th centuries. The sources will receive grammatical and palaeographical descriptions. To achieve the research objectives the research team will create an on-line digital critical edition equipped with a lexicographical database. The platform will be a complex research instrument providing an interconnected network of data based on technologies commonly used in Digital Humanities.

Duties
Development of software components for a web-based digital critical edition, among other things:

  • Development of full-text search functionalities on XML dataset stored in a BaseX database
  • Development of frameworks for converting unstructured manuscripts in Word format to structured TEI/Epidoc XML dataset
  • Refinement and maintenance of the XML dataset and the website (Typo3 CMS)

Requirements

  • Backelor’s degree or equivalent within the field of Computer Science, Computational Linguistics or other for the position relevant fields
  • Documented experience with object-oriented programming, full-stack web development (PHP / HTML / CSS / JavaScript / jQuery / AJAX), database management (MySQL / XML Databases) and scripting languages (VBA)
  • Documented good collaborative skills, drive and independence.

Additional qualifications

  • Experience with extensibe markup language (TEI XML) and related XML technologies (XPath / XSLT / Xquery)
  • Experience with source control systems (Git)
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position for 12 months. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date 1 February 2023 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
