PhD student in Cultural Anthropology

The department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology conducts education and research on many of the complex contexts that characterize today´s globalized world. The department has about 40 employees. We are a strong research driven environment having two prominent research environments that include professors, researchers, postdoctoral researchers and several doctoral students. At the department, first, second and third cycles in cultural anthropology and ethnology are taught at two campuses (Uppsala and Visby). The department is looking for a PhD candidate in Cultural Anthropology starting on 1 September 2023. The position is part of the doctoral network The Anthropology of Global Climate Urgency (C-Urge) funded by the Horizon Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions DN 2021 call (Grant Agreement number: 101073542).  The network based in five European universities will train PhD candidates in Social/Cultural Anthropology who will be pioneering innovative and much-needed qualitative climate science.

The PhD Candidate at this position will be placed at the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology at Uppsala University and will undertake research on C-Urge project 6: The Urgency of Deforestation: Expertise, technology and media in the forest economies of Argentina with the main supervisor at Uppsala University and one co-supervisor at the University of Edinburgh, UK.

Duties

As a PhD student in this position, the candidate is expected to:

• carry out nine (9) months of ethnographic fieldwork in Argentina.
• undertake an internship of three (3) months SEI Stockholm Environmental Institute
• commit to the basic premises of ethically sound research in anthropology and to the H2020 Program Guidelines on FAIR Data.
• engage in team work (in the field, with citizen scientists, and in the consortium).
• comply with deadlines and participate actively in the various training activities the consortium is organizing.
• write a PhD dissertation.
• contribute to the various academic and non-academic outputs of the project (research communication, public outreach, etc.)

Requirements & Eligibility Criteria
Education at the research level in Cultural Anthropology is regulated by the general study plan. For general information about eligibility and the requirements for admission: https://antro.uu.se/admissions/phd- studies/

Applicants fulfil the requirements for general eligibility for doctoral programmes if they have second-cycle qualification, completed at least 240 academic credits’ worth of courses, with at least 60 academic credits from second-cycle education, or acquired the equivalent knowledge in some other manner either in Sweden or abroad.

In addition to the general eligibility requirements stated above, applicants must also have completed a second-cycle degree in Cultural or Social Anthropology or equivalent. Applicants who have acquired the equivalent knowledge either in Sweden or abroad also fulfil the special eligibility requirements.

There is no nationality restriction, but applicants need to comply with the following mobility rule: they have not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date (June 2023 latest), unless a part of a compulsory national service or a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention. (art. 6.2 of the Grant Agreement).

The selection process will consider the applicant’s capacity to complete the education at the research level. This capacity is judged based upon the applicant’s research proposal within the scope and focus of the research project The Urgency of Deforestation: Expertise, technology and media in the forest economies of Argentina. The research plan must describe how the proposed project will be carried out, including fieldwork. In addition, publications and student essays are important when judging an applicant’s ability to follow and benefit from the doctoral program.

To follow the doctoral program, the ability to express oneself in both written and spoken English is considered important, as is good proficiency in Spanish to undertake fieldwork. Personal or professional experience from and/or special interest in Argentina strengthens the application.

The assessment will consider the applicant’s ambition, capacity to organize and communicate, and commitment to high quality research and applied science.

Additional information
Education at the research level in Sweden has a duration of four (4) years, financed with employment as PhD candidate. PhD candidates are expected to conduct their education at the research level by working full time and by participating actively in the activities of the department. Obligatory administrative and teaching duties at the department may not exceed 20% of full-time.

The PhD Candidate will receive a salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for Recruited Doctoral Student. The exact (net) salary will be confirmed upon appointment and is dependent on local tax regulations and on the country correction factor (to allow for the difference in cost of living in different EU Member States). The salary includes a living allowance, a mobility allowance and a family allowance (if applicable). The guaranteed PhD funding at Uppsala University is for 48 months and shall cover both the employee's as the employer's mandatory charges.

Application procedure

The full application must be submitted through Uppsala University's recruitment system and include:

1. Personal letter of interest (max 1 page). In case the candidate does not have a MA degree in Social/Cultural Anthropology, a few paragraphs need to be added in which experience in field research or familiarity with the topic and/or field (as an intern, volunteer, etc.) such as in the higher education sector, government, civil society or the private sector is described;
2. Research proposal (max 5 pages, including bibliography) for the project 6: The Urgency of Deforestation: Expertise, technology and media in the forest economies of Argentina including justification and possible field sites and methods;
3. Copy of degree certificate that proves the applicant’s eligibility for studies at the research level in Cultural Anthropology (which will have to be validated if the candidate is shortlisted, or before appointment);
4. CV (max 3 pages)
5. Copy of the MA thesis within the discipline of Anthropology or an equivalent degree;
6. Name and affiliation of two referees who may be requested to write a letter of recommendation in case the candidate is shortlisted.
7. Other publications or relevant documents, if any, that support the application.
