We seek one research assistant to work within the project “The Continuation of Conflict-related Violence in Postwar Cities: Mapping violence at the street level” (led by Emma Elfversson and Ivan Gusic).

The project started up in 2020 with funding from the Swedish Research Council and will run through 2024. A core part of the project revolves around establishing a comprehensive dataset on conflict-related violence in postwar cities where events are disaggregated to the street level. This novel data will be used to analyse where within postwar cities violence tends to cluster and, together with in-depth analysis of selected cases, assess theoretical explanations for the variation in conflict-related violence within and across postwar cities. More information about the project can be found here:https://www.statsvet.uu.se/forskning/the-continuation-of-conflict-related-violence-in-postwar-cities/.

Duties
The tasks primarily include collection of data but may also entail routine administrative/project management tasks, data analysis and visualization, and miscellaneous writing tasks. The research assistant will report to the project leaders, and work closely with other research assistants and researchers within the project.

  • Bachelor’s degree within peace and conflict studies or a related field (e.g. political science, geography, criminology)
  • Good knowledge within the field of peace & conflict research
  • Documented familiarity with Excel
  • Excellent proficiency in English (reading and writing)
  • Ability to work independently and in teams
  • Attention to detail and exactness, analytical and problem-solving skills, and good interpersonal abilities

Additional qualifications
Studies in peace and conflict or related disciplines at the Master level is highly meritorious, as is previous experience with data collection (coding), particularly conflict-related data. Proficiency in GIS analysis, and/or knowledge of software for statistical analysis such as R, is also a highly merited skill.
