Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Full-time temporary position for two years starting as soon as possible or as agreed upon

This position is based at the Division of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The Ångström Laboratory (https://www.materialvetenskap.uu.se/medicinsk-teknik/). The research at the division is focused on basic mechanisms for the development and evaluation of new materials in interaction with biological systems and it comprises two research groups, the BMS group and the EMBLA group of which you will be a member of both.

The BioMaterial Systems group, headed by Prof. Cecilia Persson, focuses on the development and characterization of new biomaterials for applications mainly in orthopaedics, with a specific focus on additive manufacturing (3D-printing). There are currently approximately 20 people in the research group. More information on the profile of the research group can be found at: http://www.materialvetenskap.uu.se/bms/.

The EMBLA group, headed by Prof. Maria Tenje, focuses on development of novel microfluidic based system for characterization of biomaterials and cellular behavior. There are currently approximately 15 people in the research group. More information on the profile of the research group can be found at: http://www.materialvetenskap.uu.se/embla/.

You will also be a member of the AM4Life competence center, which is a VINNOVA-supported Competence Centre that gathers more than 20 partners in academia, industry and the public sector to support competence development in additive manufacturing for the life sciences. The centre is led by Prof. Persson and is funded by academia, industry and VINNOVA in equal parts, with a total budget of approx. 100 MSEK and will run between 2020-2025 in a first instance, and engage experts within academia and industry with a passion for 3D-printing with the ultimate goal of developing new technologies to improve people’s lives. https://www.uu.se/en/research/am4life/

Project description: A Biomaterial-on-Chip system was recently developed at the division, which allows integration of different biomaterials into a culture environment with controlled flow conditions. The system can be coupled to an optical microscope and it allows studying the cell response at different stages of culture. The aim of this project is to adapt and utilize the newly developed system to study the interaction and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells and osteoblasts with newly developed, 3D-printed biomaterials.

Work duties: The tasks within this research project involve planning and performing different types of experiments, for example, adaptation of Biomaterial-on-Chip system to investigate the interaction and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells and osteoblasts cells on Mg implants through analytical approaches as well as optical microscopy. The work also involves analyzing the results and disseminating the new knowledge through scientific articles in top journals and presentations at international conferences. The work will be performed in collaboration with other group members, working on similar projects. The position may also include some supervision of undergraduate and PhD students.

Qualification requirements: PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in biology, biophysics, biomedical engineering, material science or related fields.  The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

For this position the following is required:

  • Documented experience in mammalian cell culture
  • Documented experience in working with microfluidics
  • Good written and oral skills in English as well as very good scientific writing skills
  • Ability to work both individually and in a team, and to be able to collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment with colleagues

Additional qualifications: The following requirements will be considered as a merit:

  • Experience in working with mesenchymal stem cells
  • Experience in analytical techniques (e.g. optical microscopy, flow cytometry, qPCR)
  • Experience in fabrication of microfluidic devices
  • Experience in transcriptomics and/or proteomics data analysis
  • Experience in obtaining research grants

Application procedure:

The application shall include:

  • Cover letter (1-2 page)
  • CV (max 2 pages)
  • List of publications
  • Copy of your PhD degree, grades and other merits of relevance. Translations into English or Swedish if the original documents have not been issued in any of these languages.
  • Name and contact information to at least two reference persons (e-mail address and phone no.).

The application shall be written in English.

About the employment: The employment is a temporary position of 2 years according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100%. Starting date  as soon as possible or as agreed upon. Placement: Uppsala
