Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University is one of the largest and strongest environments for research in both theoretical and experimental research in physics and astronomy. The department is strongly involved in research carried out at national and international research infrastructures for which we develop and manufacture advanced instruments. The Division of High Energy Physics focuses its research on three areas: collider experiments, neutrino experiments and particle theory. The division is undergoing a generational change at its best and this call is intended to strengthen the activity in collider based experimental particle physics.

Description of subject area of the employment:

The research concerns experimental work at colliders and in particular analysis of proton-proton collision data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, especially for the purpose of studying the Higgs boson and looking for other particles predicted by theories beyond the standard model. The work also includes the operation and development of the ATLAS experiment at CERN and of eScience methods in high-energy physics with the aim of streamlining the processing of experimental data. The work must be well integrated with the High Energy Physics Division LHC activities and future plans for infrastructure to create the highest possible particle energies such as FCC (Future Circular Collider).

Duties:

  • Teaching, research and administration. Teaching includes course responsibility and course administration as well as supervision of doctoral students. Participation in pedagogical and course development work are also counted as teaching.
  • Follow the development within the own subject area and the development of society in general that is important for the work at the university and actively contribute to external activities.
  • The work also includes contributing to and working for the national development of research in particle physics in Sweden.
  • The employment may require visits to CERN for both operation of the experiment and possible management assignments within the experiment.

Qualifications Required:

  • Doctoral degree in elementary particle physics or equivalent.
  • Scientific and pedagogical skills or other professional skills. It is required that the pedagogical skills, the scientific competence and the professional skills are relevant to the subject area of the employment and the tasks that are to be included in the employment.
  • The applicant must have completed relevant university pedagogical education comprising ten weeks for activities within the university or have acquired corresponding knowledge. If there are special reasons, the higher education pedagogical education can be completed during the first two years of employment.
  • Documented ability to teach in Swedish or English unless there are special reasons.
  • Personal qualities required to perform the job well.

Assessment Criteria/Ranking of applicants that fulfil the above-mentioned qualifications for either of the research areas:

The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, which will be given equal weight.

Research Expertise comprises documented research merits as well as the applicant´s potential to contribute to the future development of research. In assessing research excellence quality is ranked highest. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, is also afforded consideration. When assessing the scientific skill, special emphasis will be placed on research merits in particle physics research that extends beyond the Standard Model for particle physics with the ability to initiate experimental work based on own ideas, including analysis of experimental data. Merit is work with the aim of developing long-term experimental particle physics in collisions.

Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and education in the third cycle, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community.

Teaching Expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. In assessing teaching excellence, teaching quality is ranked highest. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, is also afforded consideration. When assessing pedagogical skills, pedagogical quality must primarily be taken into account. Extent, both width and depth, must also be given importance. When assessing the pedagogical skills, equal emphasis will be placed on the supervision of undergraduate students and doctoral students. Work in pedagogical development is an advantage.

Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise.

Administrative Expertise is important for the employment and will be given consideration. Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organise, and prioritise work in an efficient and task-related manner as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Expertise includes overall operational planning and the capacity to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner based on an awareness of goals and quality. Experience in administration within international projects, collaborations or organizations is an advantage.

Management Expertise is important and will be given consideration. Skill includes the ability to lead work groups and projects. Meriting is work within international collaborations or organizations.

Collaboration Expertise is important and will be given consideration. Collaborative skills include external activities, collaboration with companies and authorities. Meriting is the use of social media for collaborative tasks.

All merits must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both quality and scope.

In filling this position, the university aims to appoint the applicant who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of her/his competence and expertise, is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.

Further information:

In an overall assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, parental leave, part-time work relating to care of children, union assignments, military service, or the like are to be regarded as work experience.
