Description
Uppsala University is establishing a new node as part of the Chemical Biology Consortium Sweden (www.cbcs.se), a national infrastructure for chemical biology. CBCS operates in a highly collaborative fashion in projects with academic and industrial users, offering a platform for the identification of chemical tools (bioactive small-molecules) for all fields of life sciences (molecular-, cell-, structural biology and microbiology, pharmacology; natural product and environmental research, etc.). The UU node will offer services focused on cell profiling and screening primarily using the Cell Painting assay.

We are looking for an experienced biomedical analyst (BMA) who will work in the facility to establish and offer high-quality morphological profiling services, as well as small molecule screening. The position is placed at the Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences located at the Biomedical Center (BMC), Uppsala University, where you will work closely with a team of biologists, data scientists, and engineers in close collaboration to the Pharmaceutical Bioinformatics research group (https://farmbio.uu.se/research/pharmaceutical-bioinformatics/), to enable chemical biology and drug discovery innovations.

Duties
The activities will include establishing and performing profiling and screening of compounds using primarily the Cell Painting assay. This will include cell line management (maintenance and cryopreservation), protocol optimisation and troubleshooting, safe handling of chemical compounds, reagents, and preparation of solutions, interaction and operation with automated liquid handling and robotized equipment, image acquisition using high-throughput microscopes. Other tasks include ordering, shipments, inventory, risk assessments. You will operate in an international team in a vibrant research environment, in close collaboration with researchers from diverse backgrounds and with frequent interactions with customers.

Requirements
University degree in a relevant field. More than five years of laboratory experience, including cell culture, molecular biology techniques such as immunofluorescence staining, cell-based assay development and optimization of lab protocols. Laboratory automation experience and an ability to troubleshoot high throughput equipment including robotic liquid handlers. You must be highly motivated, dedicated, and possess strong skills for problem solving. Further, you must enjoy learning new methods, be dedicated to high quality and reproducible data production, and capable of working independently as well as in a group in a structured and efficient way with several projects in parallel. General computer proficiency and excellent communication skills in written and spoken English are essential, as well as documentation skills and experience with electronic lab notebooks. Special emphasis will be placed on strong interpersonal skills and personal qualities such as independence, flexibility, perseverance and initiative, as well as social skills such as collaborative ability and being service-minded.

Meriting
Previous experience in:

  • High-throughput sample preparation
  • High-content imaging
  • Method development in the molecular biology field
  • Small molecule phenotypic screening and profiling
  • Working in pharmaceutical industry or academic screening centers
