Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

The Division of Nanotechnology and Functional Materials (NFM) is part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Ångström Laboratory. Researchers at NFM have extensive experience in energy storage, biocompatibility, nanosafety, additive manufacturing, as well as the development of functional porous materials for various application areas, such as for drug delivery, gas separation, water purification and catalysis.

The available position is placed in the research group of Dr Ocean Cheung. The group’s research focuses on the development of porous materials for a wide range of applications, including gas separation, water treatment, catalysis, and drug delivery to name a few. The group has strong competence in the synthesis and optimisation of a wide range of porous materials, including porous oxides, zeolites, metal-organic framework (MOF), zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) etc.

Work duties: Planning and carrying out research projects on the synthesis of existing and novel porous materials and functionalization of porous materials as well as optimizing these materials for greenhouse gas (i.e. CO2 and SF6) separation and/or heterogeneous catalysis. You will also be required to characterize the materials by X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), gas adsorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

You are expected to conduct high-quality research and be able to communicate and collaborate effectively with other researcher and doctoral students in the group in a collaborative and supportive environment. Opportunities to explore new ideas related to the research area through discussions with other group members are strongly encouraged. Part of the work will be carried out in collaboration with national and international collaborators.

Qualification requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

This position requires a doctoral degree in chemistry, materials science, or closely related disciplines.

We require documented knowledge and experience in the synthesis and characterization of porous materials, including mesoporous alkaline earth metal carbonates, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), and bismuth-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). We also require documented experience in performing volumetric CO2 and SF6 gas sorption experiments. Good laboratory skills and experience regarding the use of powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and vibration spectroscopy (e.g. IR and Raman) is essential.

We require good oral and written skills in English.

Furthermore, you are required to have the ability to plan and conduct scientific projects in a structured and methodical way. You must also be able to present your research to a wide audience.

Additional qualifications: Documented knowledge and experience in laser-based additive manufacturing techniques (such as selective laser sintering) of polymers for personalized medicines is desirable.

Application procedure: The application should include:

  • Cover letter (including a brief description of the applicant’s research/career vision).
  • A brief description of your experience and competence with relevant characterisation techniques.
  • CV (max 2 pages).
  • List of publications.
  •  PhD certificate and official transcript of studies at degree level and above.
  •  A short description (of maximum 300 words) of your PhD thesis.
  • If available, an electronic version of your PhD thesis (or a web-link).
  •  Contact information (including their relationship to you) of at least two reference persons.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 1 January 2022 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position for two years according to central collective agreement.
