Uppsala University’s Department of Game Design is located at Campus Gotland, which has the best of two worlds: the broad range and high status of the full-scale University’s education and research and the unique study environment at a small-scale campus. Here, education in the areas of game development and game design is provided, and research focusing on basic issues in game design is under way. Here, education is conducted in the principal area of Game Design at both bachelor and master level as well as research in game design.

The department of Game Design is in an expansive phase and is currently developing both its research and new programs at the advanced level. With this position, the department wants to strengthen the teaching and research competence in the field of games and psychology.

Description of the subject area of the employment
The intended research and teaching area is game design and psychology with a focus on psychological processes related to gameplay, social player behavior, test design /assessment and learning. We particularly encourage applicants with interest in empirical research methods such as eye tracking or various psychological instruments and assessment methods.

Regular attendance at the workplace on Campus Gotland is required for active participation in the department's development work.

Duties
Research, teaching and administration. Teaching includes course coordination, supervision and course administration. The position permits teaching, including course administration, up to 50%.

At least 50% of the position should be devoted to research. Duties also include actively applying for external research funding, as well as following developments within the discipline and developments in society at large of relevance for teaching at the university.

Qualifications required
To be eligible for employment as an associate senior lecturer, applicants must hold a PhD in game design, or other fields of relevance to the position, for example in psychology or have achieved equivalent scientific expertise. It is required that the pedagogical skills, the scientific skills and the professional skills are relevant to the subject content of the employment and the task that are to be included in the employment.

The applicant should have completed five weeks of department-relevant teacher training at the higher education level, or be deemed to have equivalent knowledge.

In addition, as a general eligibility requirement for teachers, the applicant must have the personal qualities required to fulfill the position well, such as flexibility, responsibility, ability to lead teams and courses.

Eligibility requires documented ability to teach and administer in English.

Assessment criteria for applicants who meet the eligibility requirements
When selecting among eligible applicants, special emphasizes particularly on both scientific and pedagogical skills. Scientific and pedagogical skills will be given equal weight. Management skills and administrative skills will also be assessed.

Research skills/expertise refers to research merit. When assessing the scientific skill, scientific quality will primarily be taken into account. The scope of the research, mainly depth and breadth, will also be given importance. The assessment of scientific qualifications emphasizes particularly expertise in the area of game design research and psychology with yet a special focus on empirical psycho-physiological assessment methods, such as eye tracking and biometric feedback. Proficiency in behavioral tests and quantitative methods is also an advantage. In addition to relevant experience and publications, the planned research will be given importance in the selection.

Demonstrated ability to interact both interdisciplinary and with the surrounding society is an advantage.

Pedagogical skills/expertise refer to educational and teaching qualifications. In addition to academic qualifications, education and teaching qualifications from other activities, which include, for example, supervision, in-house training or mentoring programs, can also be taken to account. When assessing pedagogical skills, pedagogical quality must primarily be taken into account. Extent, both width and depth, must also be given importance. When assessing the pedagogical skills, special emphasis will be on experience of teaching in Game Design and psychological aspects at stake. Supervision of master’s/bachelor students is also educational and teaching merit

Administrative skills and other proficiencies are also significant to the post and will be given due weight. Administrative skills are demonstrated, among other things, through the ability to plan, organise and prioritise work effectively and in a purpose-adapted manner. Skills include overall planning and the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects the university’s priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner and based on an awerness of goals and quality.

Qualifications should be documented so that both quality and scope can be assessed.

Period of employment
Employment as an associate senior lecturer is held for four years. After half of the employment period, an indicative evaluation of the employee’s merits take place. Employment of an associate senior lecturer aims at merit for employment for which higher requirements are set for eligibility. If the associate senior lecturer applies and is judged to meet the requirements for promotion, he, she or them, must be promoted and permanently employed as an senior lecturer.
