Description of the subject area: Geriatrics, the study of the diseases of ageing, is a broad discipline that covers age-related diseases/conditions such as dementia, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, falls and other geriatric syndromes. Geriatrics is a vibrant discipline at Uppsala University and the Uppsala University Hospital. The Section of Geriatrics is organised under the Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences, and cognitive diseases are the main focus of research. Clinical studies are carried out at the Memory and Geriatrics Clinic at the University Hospital, which are aimed at achieving better understanding of disease progression with regard to Alzheimer’s Disease in particular, as well as various aspects of normal ageing. There is also an extensive biobank linked to clinical data. The Molecular Genetics research group work in the Rudbeck Laboratory, where the group is studying the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases to better understand the underlying causes and make use of such knowledge in the development of new diagnostics and therapies.
Duties: Duties include general responsibility for third-cycle research and education in the discipline and teaching and supervision at the first-, second- and third-cycle levels. Tasks of an administrative nature may also be required. Clinical practice as a specialist physician in geriatrics is included. Duties also include presenting information on research and development work.
Qualifications: To be eligible for employment as a professor, the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise (Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 3). Under the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University, having the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well is a general eligibility requirement for teachers, as well as good collaboration skills (section 5 AR).
Research expertise must have been demonstrated by independent research contributions and by achievements that are of very high quality by international standards. The applicant must have demonstrated expertise in planning, initiating, leading, and developing research, have demonstrated the capacity to obtain research funding in competition, and demonstrate well-documented expertise in supervising third-cycle students. The applicant’s contributions to the international and national scientific community must be assessed on the basis of such criteria as the quality and scope of scholarly publications. (See section 31 AR.)
Teaching expertise must have been demonstrated by an extensive educational portfolio. (See section 22 AR.) Furthermore, the applicant must demonstrate well-documented expertise in supervision at the first cycle, second cycle and third cycle levels. However, the applicant must have obtained Swedish registration as a specialist in geriatrics by the date the employment decision is made.
The applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and English.
Assessment criteria: In the selection among more than one qualified applicant research expertise will be assigned primary weight, followed by teaching expertise and clinical expertise. The assessment criteria will however be co-weighted such that an applicant assessed as having much greater teaching expertise than an applicant who has slightly greater research expertise may be ranked ahead of the latter. Equally great care will be devoted to examination of teaching expertise and research expertise.
Research expertise refers to research qualifications. In assessing research expertise research quality must be the prime consideration. Research qualifications in the field of geriatrics are of particular importance to the appointment and will be assigned weight. Consideration must also be given to the scope of the research, in terms primarily of its depth and breadth. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education in the third cycle, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as demonstrated ability to collaborate and engage with the wider community through research. (See section 20 AR.) See also Guidelines and Assessment Criteria for Recruiting and Promoting Teachers at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy (GA, section 3).
Teaching expertise refers to teaching qualifications. In assessing teaching expertise, teaching quality must be the prime consideration. Consideration must be given to the scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching. The ability to interact with actors inside and outside the University in relation to issues of teaching and learning in higher education is also included in teaching expertise. See also section 4 GA.
Clinical expertise is demonstrated through clinical work and clinical training as well as participation in clinical developmental work. Among other things, clinical developmental work involves efforts to improve or streamline health care and medical care.
When the University appoints new teachers, those applicants must be selected who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of their competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.
Assessment criteria, other expertise: Management expertise and administrative expertise are important for the appointment and will both be assigned weight. The ability to collaborate with the surrounding community and to communicate information about research and development work will be taken into account.
Management expertise is demonstrated through ability to lead activities and staff, make decisions, assume responsibility, motivate others and provide them with what they require for the effective achievement of common objectives. Ability to coordinate a group and to help generate a sense of commitment, enhance participation and enjoyment of work, and ability to deal with conflicts, are further examples of how expertise is demonstrated. See also section 5 GA.
According to the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University, administrative expertise is demonstrated through, for example, the capacity to plan, organise and prioritise work in a manner that is effective and adapted to the purpose, as well as the ability to specify and adhere to time frames. This form of expertise includes overall work planning; ability to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities; and ability to work in a structured manner and on the basis of an awareness of goals and quality. See also section 5, GA.
When assessing collaborative expertise, experience with and expertise in education and outreach, editorships and other activities related to knowledge exchange between the University and the surrounding community, as well as experience with innovation and entrepreneurship, shall be of significance. See also section 6 GA.
The gender equality aspect must be applied in connection with employment if it proves, after qualitative assessment, that two applicants of different genders have equivalent or near-equivalent qualifications and one of the genders is under-represented (accounts for less than 40 percent within the relevant position category and at the relevant workplace).
