Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

The available position is with the research group of Johan Elf. The Elf group works across the borders of conventional research disciplines to investigate life at the molecular level. We build physical models of central biological processes and develop different measurement methods to test these in living cells.

Project description: The Elf group currently runs several ambitious projects to investigating and counteracting the emergence of antibiotic resistance. Much of this research is based on imaging and analysis of pathogens and bacterial strain libraries over time, which requires customized image processing and analysis software. For example, we do rapid species determination and resistance analysis of complex infections. Our ability to study advanced connections between genetics and function continuously improves as the available molecular tools become more and more sophisticated, but all these methods demand increasingly powerful analysis algorithms both in terms of precision and scalability.

Work description: As a Post Doctor in AI-based analysis of dynamic processes, you will innovate and develop the lab's AI-based image processing and analysis algorithms for studies of living cells in microfluidic culture systems. In particular, you will develop methods that learn dynamic models of how molecules and cellular components move inside the cells throughout the cell cycle. This is a full-time research position, but teaching opportunities are available if you are interested, but not more than 20% of the service. You are expected to run your project independently and you have the freedom to develop your own ideas within the overall framework of the project. We offer a stimulating interdisciplinary environment where you will work closely with experts in microbiology, microfluidics, biophysics, image analysis, and molecular biology.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in machine learning, image analysis, signal processing, or another relevant* subject. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
Furthermore, you must have good knowledge of machine learning and dynamic processes. To be eligible for the position, you must also have a creative and self-motivated personality and an interest in basic research. As the project requires collaboration with other researchers in the group, you should have good social skills and you should be able to communicate fluently in English.

* The relevance is determined by the recruiting research group.

Additional qualifications: Experience in image analysis is desirable.

Your application should contain the following:

  • Cover letter where you justify why you are qualified for the position (max. 1 page).
  • CV including list of publications.
  • Copy of official academic degrees.
  • Names, e-mail addresses and telephone numbers of three academic references persons.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 01-01-2022 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position according to central collective agreement.

Scope of employment: 100 %
