Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Admission to PhD studies in the subject engineering science with specialization in nanotechnology and functional materials

Project description: The Division of Nanotechnology and Functional Materials has many years of experience from developing nanomaterials with a broad range of applications such as energy storage, catalysis, and within the life sciences.

The PhD project is part of a larger collaborative project between several groups at Linköping University and Uppsala University. New and exciting 2D materials synthesized through the chemical exfoliation of laminated parent 3D crystals will be investigated at the Division of Nanotechnology and Functional Materials for targeted applications, with a particular emphasis on catalysis, energy storage, ion sieving, biocompatibility and antibacterial activity.

Work duties: The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

The work tasks in this project include the development of these 2D materials for specific applications suited to the properties of these materials, and thus will included characterisation, modification and testing of the materials in a variety of applications. We are looking for a dexterous and creative applicant with a broad range of practical skills to develop these materials and to apply them in the application areas mentioned above.

Qualification requirements: MSc in chemistry, biotechnology, engineering or similar disciplines related to the research field. The applicant should have a strong interest in materials chemistry and their applications.

We expect you to be proficient in oral and written English in order to interact and communicate effectively with all employees as well as to publish internationally. Excellent pedagogic and collaborative skills are required.

Additional qualifications: Experience in general materials characterisation techniques such as X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and spectroscopy techniques is an advantage.

Personal qualities, such as the ability to manage and run scientific projects and to simultaneously interact with other researchers are very important. The applicant needs to be determined, structured and able to work efficiently both individually and in groups.

Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:

  • has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
  • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
  • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/.

Application: The application should contain a brief description of the research interests and relevant experience, CV, publication list, copies of diplomas and grades, thesis work (or a draft thereof) and other relevant documents. We would like you to provide reference information or attach a letter of recommendation.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.

Starting date: As soon as possible or as otherwise agreed
