Uppsala University, Department of Electrical Engineering

The Department of Electrical Engineering consists of the three divisions, electricity, solid-state electronics and signals and systems with in total 130 employees. The three divisions are well integrated and have a well-developed collaboration both in research and education. The department is expanding within many exciting application areas, such as, e.g., electrification, digitalization and sensor technology. The different divisions have a well-developed collaboration with leading Swedish industry. For more information about the department see https://elektroteknik.uu.se.

The position will be placed at the Division of Signals and Systems at the Department of Electrical Engineering.

The Division of Signals and Systems conducts research in a wide area including signal processing wireless communications, wireless sensor networks, automatic control and machine learning. The research is to a large extent funded by external grants obtained primarily from the Swedish Research Council (VR), The foundation for Strategic Research and The Swedish Innovation Agency (VINNOVA). The division is responsible for the two PhD programs Electrical Engineering with specialization in Signal Processing and Electrical Engineering with specialization in Automatic Control. In addition, the division is responsible for a large number of courses given at the different engineering programs. The division is well connected in the international research community and with the Swedish industry.

Description of subject area of the employment: Signal Processing is to a large extent a methodological science with a large toolbox that can be applied to many different subject areas. It is a natural component of modern IT systems. Examples include 4G and 5G cellular networks, wireless sensor networks, Internet-of-Things, sensor fusion, infotainment- and security systems in cars, navigation- and audio systems etc. The methods used in signal processing are often model based and data driven where mathematical-statistical and adaptive algorithms are frequently used to solve different problems. The subject has broadened significantly during recent years fueled by increased computer power and the abundance of available sensor data in many application areas. Within the area of Cyber Physical Systems, where security and privacy are important ingredients, signal processing is frequently used. Other areas where signal processing is frequently used are, e.g., machine learning, neural networks and various types of distributed systems.

Duties:

  • As professor you represent your subject. With the title follow responsibility for the content, development, and quality of the subject in both research, undergraduate, and graduate education.
  • Research, teaching and administration. Supervision and teaching at third-cycle level and teaching at first- and second-cycle level. Teaching duties include course responsibility and course administration. The Division of Signals and Systems is responsible for the PhD programs Electrical Engineering with specialization in Signal Processing and Electrical Engineering with specialization in Automatic Control. Hence it is desirable that the holder of the position can be responsible for both subjects.
  • Information about research and development and participation in the planning of research projects.
  • Follow developments within the subject area and the development of society in general that is important for the work at the university.
  • The position includes leadership and personnel responsibilities for the Division of Signals and Systems.

Qualifications Required:

  • Research Expertise and Teaching Expertise. It is necessary that the pedagogical skills, the research expertise and the professional skills are relevant to the content of the employment and the tasks that will be included in the employment.
  • Applicants must have completed teacher training of relevance to operations at the University, comprising ten weeks, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. If special circumstances apply, this training for teachers in higher education may be completed during the first two years of employment.
  • Documented ability to teach in Swedish or English is a requirement unless special reasons prevail. The holder is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.
  • Personal capabilities necessary to carry out fully the duties of the appointment.

Assessment Criteria/Ranking of applicants that fulfil the above-mentioned qualifications required

The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, of which weight will be primarily given to research expertise.

Research Expertise comprises research merits. In addition to academic merits, research merits from other activities, including technology development, may also be considered including research merits obtained outside the academy, which includes, for example, technology development and innovation ability. In assessing research expertise research quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. In assessing research expertise special weight will be attached to broad research merits with theoretical depth, but also with potential to be of significant value for Swedish industry.

Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and education in the third cycle, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community.

Teaching Expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. This expertise could have been achieved outside the academy through supervision, internal training, mentoring programs, etc. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration.

In assessing teaching expertise special weight will be attached to merits in areas where the division is responsible for courses at the engineering programs, for exampel, signals and systems, signal processing, wireless communications, automatic control, analog and digital electronics, and embedded systems.

Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise.

Administrative Expertise is important for the employment and will be given high consideration. Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organise, and prioritise work in an efficient and task-related manner as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Expertise includes overall operational planning and personnel responsibilities. Administrative expertise also includes entrepreneurship.

Management Expertise is important and will be afforded high consideration. Management expertise is demonstrated through the capacity to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate others, providing them with what is needed for the efficient achievement of common goals. The abilities to coordinate the group and help create a sense of involvement, participation, and enjoyment in work and to deal with conflicts constitute further examples of demonstrated expertise.

Collaboration Expertise is important and will be afforded high consideration. Collaborative expertise is demonstrated by the ability and skill of planning, organizing and implementing interaction with the surrounding community. Popular publications, public debate and lectures are examples of forms of interaction with the surrounding community. Other examples of collaboration are patent applications, commercialization and industrial cooperation.

Other Expertise of importance for the position such as, for example, innovation and patent work, leading positions in industry, and/or other leading positions, for example, member of Board of Directors, will be considered a merit.

All merits must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both quality and scope.

In filling this position the university aims to appoint the applicant who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of her/his competence and expertise, is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.
