Uppsala University, Department of Ecology and Genetics

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se. A PhD student position in Microbial community ecology is available at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, Limnology.

The limnology programme includes 3 major, highly interactive and collaboration research groups: microbial ecology, population and community ecology and biogeochemistry. See https://www.ieg.uu.se/limnology/

Project description: It is well known that different ecosystems are connected to each other through transport of energy and matter, which in turn affects the functioning of ecosystems. It is however, less investigated is how dispersal of living organisms affects ecosystems, not primarily due to their functions, but rather because of the matter they transport between ecosystems. This project focuses on the dispersal of bacteria between ecosystems, and their importance as a food source for higher trophic levels. One hypothesis to be tested is that the importance of bacteria as a food source depends on their food quality, for instance related to their elemental stoichiometry. The project consists of field work as well as laboratory experiments. The project is financed by the Swedish Research Council.

Qualifications required: To be eligible for a PhD-student position the applicant must hold a master degree (or equivalent) in Limnology, Ecology, Microbial ecology or something similar. To be qualified, candidates should have knowledge and experience in the fields of community ecology and/or microbial ecology. Emphasis will be placed on the candidates’ personal suitability, including independence and teamwork skills. Candidates must be able to express themselves very well in spoken as well as written English.

Qualifications desired: Previous experience from practical work in lab and field, including experimental and microbiology methods such as microscopy, flow cytometry, cultivation, stoichiometric analyses, and molecular characterization of microbial communities. Theoretical knowledge of metacommunity and metaecosystem ecology. Knowledge and experience of statistical methods such as multivariate methods and bioinformatics.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.

Starting date: As agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. The graduate program covers four years of full-time study. The position can be combined with teaching or other duties at the department (maximum 20%), which prolongs the employment with the corresponding time.
