Teaching duties include course coordination, course administration, and supervision at the Bachelor, Master, and doctoral levels. Duties also include actively applying for external research funding, following developments in the subject field as well as following relevant development in society that is of relevance for the research and education at the university. Senior lecturers are expected to contribute to the research and teaching environment, and periodically to take on larger administrative responsibilities.

Eligibility: To be eligible for appointment as senior lecturer, the applicant must hold a Ph.D. in peace and conflict research or related field, or possess equivalent scholarly competence. The applicant must have published research in the field in one or more international peer-review outlets. Further on, the applicant must have demonstrated teaching expertise and have completed teacher training of relevance to operations at the University, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. A general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well.

Excellence in English (orally and written) is a requirement. Swedish language proficiency is not required for this position. Presently, all teaching in the Department is in English, as well as most seminars and meetings. According to the Language Act, Swedish is the language of public administration. Since Uppsala University is a government agency many administrative meetings and documents are in Swedish, and translations cannot always be made as a routine.

In assessing research expertise research quality will be the prime consideration. In the assessment of research skills, special attention will be given to the applicants’ current research in addition to their demonstrated ability to initiate and conduct research within the field of peace and conflict research. Publications in prestigious academic journals and with major academic presses are meritorious. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, will also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration will be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and education at the postgraduate level, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community.

Pedagogic proficiency will be assessed as carefully as scientific proficiency. Pedagogical skills should be well documented so that the quality can be assessed.

In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration will be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise.

When the University appoints new teachers those applicants must be selected who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of their competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.

The Recruitment Committee may in this recruitment come to use interviews, trial-lectures and referrals. The applicant should therefore submit a list of referees with insight into the applicant’s professional skill as well as personal qualities that may be of relevance for the position, e.g. ability to cooperate, ability to lead, and working methods.

Administrative and management skills are important for this position and will be afforded weight.

Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an efficient and task-related manner as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Management expertise is demonstrated through the capacity to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate others, providing them with what is needed for the efficient achievement of common goals. The abilities to coordinate the group and help create a sense of involvement, participation, and enjoyment in work and to deal with conflicts constitute further examples of demonstrated expertise.

Personal circumstances (such as full or part-time parental leave, trade union appointments, military service, or other) that may benefit the applicants in the assessment of qualifications should be included in the list of qualifications and experience (Curriculum Vitae).
