Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The PhD student will be at the Department of Earth Sciences, Programme for Air, Water and Landscape Sciences. Starting date 2021-04-01 or according to agreement.

The Centre for Natural Disaster Science (CNDS) is a national center for research on natural disasters. The research conducted at CNDS aims to improve the ability to prevent and deal with risks in society by raising awareness of the dynamics and consequences of natural hazards.

This PhD project will focus on extreme meteorological conditions in coastal regions and the impact on coastal infrastructures and marine energy production. Combinations of extreme events (wind, waves, icing and water levels) as well as compound events can potentially simultaneously cause large problems influencing for example energy production over large areas. The project will focus on the physical description of extreme events e.g. impacts of air-sea interaction using high-resolution numerical modelling. The results will be used together with engineering aspects and societal risk assessments. Collaboration and dialogue within the CNDS framework will provide an interdisciplinary platform to share and gain expertice within disaster risk reduction.

Requirements of the applicants: The applicant shall have a university science degree in meteorology or similar. Other technical or science degrees may also be considered, in particularly oceanography or engineering. The successful candidate shall have a solid base in mathematics, physics, and basic computer skills. Previous experience of programming and numerical modelling is considered a merit.

Application: The application should include a statement of research interest, CV/resume, verified list of course grades and contact details for reference persons. If available, a Master thesis and letters of recommendation can also be attached.
