PhD student at the Department of Modern Languages - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

The Department of Modern Languages has some 60 employees, engaged primarily in research and teaching in numerous languages, in both linguistics and literary studies.

A vacant position is now announced at the Department for a PhD student specialising in linguistics or literary studies within one of the Department’s subjects in doctoral education: Finno-Ugric, Romance or Slavic Languages. Priority subjects and specialisations are:

Finno-Ugric Languages, especially Estonian and Finnish Romance Languages, especially French and/or Spanish literary studies Slavic Languages.

The Department’s research areas are listed here. The researchers are also profiled on this page. Note that although they specialise in certain areas, they are qualified to supervise PhD students in closely related areas as well.

Work duties and project description: Education at doctoral level takes four years and is funded by means of a PhD studentship. Doctoral students are required to devote their working time mainly to their PhD studies. and to participate actively in the Department’s seminars. In addition, some service (such as teaching) at the Department may be included. The final form of the project will be defined on consultation with the student’s supervisor.

Qualification requirements and eligibility: To qualify for admission to education at doctoral level and thereby a PhD studentship, the applicant must meet both basic and specific eligibility criteria. Basic eligibility requires a degree at advanced (Master, second-cycle) level and completion of course requirements amounting to at least 240 higher education (HE) credits, of which at least 60 are at advanced level, or acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other way.

For specific eligibility, an applicant must fulfil the requirements for a one-year Master degree in one of the three subjects of Finno-Ugric Languages, Romance Languages and Slavic Languages or, alternatively, possess equivalent documented qualifications attained by some other means, in one of these subjects and one of the specialisations (literary studies or linguistics) in which research is conducted at the Department.

Knowledge of Swedish is a desirable qualification. Exemption from the need for knowledge of Swedish will, if necessary, be sought from the Faculty of Languages for the applicant who is deemed to have the best qualifications in other respects.

Selection: Selection is based on applicants’ ability to benefit from the education provided. In the assessment, particular emphasis is laid on the quality of the applicant’s thesis plan. Further criteria for assessment are the applicant’s previous study results; capacity for independent work and critical analysis, demonstrated by previous degree projects, for example; relevant experience; and interviews.

1. CV or list of qualifications with register transcripts confirming the applicant’s general and specific eligibility for education at doctoral level.
2. Attested true copies of degree and/or diploma certificates.
3. Dissertations at basic (Bachelor, first-cycle) and advanced (Master, second-cycle) level, and/or degree projects.
4. A thesis plan written in Swedish or English (approx. five pages long, excluding references), describing the project that the applicant intends to carry out.
5. Brief summary (approx. 300 words) of the thesis plan, written in the language in which the applicant intends to write the thesis.

Salary: subject to local agreement (Local collective agreement on salaries for doctoral students, unofficial translation).
