Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet).

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science (LUVAL) encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography.

Duties/Project description: Polar lows, which is also called Arctic hurricanes, are intense mesoscale cyclones over high-latitude oceans. They pose considerable risk to the Arctic activities. However, polar lows are hard to be predicated by today’s forecast models due to their small scale and short life. Many air-wave-sea-ice interaction processes are important for the polar low development, however, they are poorly understood and represented in the forecast models. This limits our understanding and leads to the poor prediction skill of polar lows. Based on an state-of-the-art atmosphere-wave-ocean-ice coupled system, the role of atmosphere-wave-ocean-ice coupling process on the development of polar lows will be investigated under different atmospheric and oceanic environment in this project. Another aim of this project is to investigate the polar low trend in future climate based on the fully coupled system. And the role of polar lows on the polar climate will also be explored.

Requirements: The applicant shall have a university science degree in meteorology or similar. Other technical or science degrees may also be considered, in particularly oceanography. The successful candidate shall have a solid base in mathematics, physics, and basic computer skills.

Additional qualifications: Previous knowledge in programming, numeral methods and modelling is an advantage.
