Postdoctoral position within Peace and Conflict - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. The Department of Peace and Conflict Research offers a vibrant research environment and Uppsala itself is a pleasant university town close to Stockholm.

Project description:
The Department is now recruiting a postdoc researcher to work in the project “Politics of Protection: Explaining International Responses to Atrocities”, headed by Associate Professor Lisa Hultman. The position is for 2 years (starting 1 January 2021, start date is negotiable). 

The purpose of the project is to study how protection of civilians has developed into an international norm, and how politicized its application is, by systematically examining how the international community responds to violence against civilians in armed conflicts. 

Duties:
The postdoc will primarily conduct independent research related to the project theme, but is also expected to collaborate with others in the research team and take on smaller administrative tasks related to the project. Some opportunities for teaching at the department may also arise. The position comes with additional funding for research-related costs, such as fieldwork and conferences.

Requirements:
To qualify for an employment as a postdoc you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Peace and Conflict Research or Political Science.

The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. The applicant also need to be fluent in English (both in speech and writing).

The application should contain the following:

1. personal letter stating why you are interested in the position (one page)
2. research proposal outlining an idea related to the project theme that you would like to work on (one page)
3. CV, including a list of publications
4. letter of recommendation (one)

Assessment:
Candidates are assessed based on:

1) demonstrated research skills, particularly in conducting theory-driven empirical research (strong methodological skills are highly valued)
2) the research proposal and the potential for contributing to the project
3) knowledge about the project theme
4) personal suitability to perform the tasks.

Salary: Individual salary.
 
Starting date: 1 January 2021, or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position according to central collective agreement (2 years).
