Uppsala University, Department of Ecology and Genetics

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se. The Limnology program engages in research and education on the ecology and biogeochemistry of inland waters, from microscopic to global scale.

Project description: We are looking for a PhD student within a project on the leakage of environmentally harmful substances from sediments at dam removal. When hydropower dams get old and are removed, the sediment that has accumulated in the reservoir is mobilised. Sediments are often rich in substances that can have a negative impact on the environment, and nutrients, metals, organic pollutants and greenhouse gases can leak from the sediment as it erodes and is transported downstream. In connection to a planned dam removal, the project will quantify the mobilisation of sediment and leakage of environmentally harmful substances through a combination of field measurements, laboratory experiments and modelling. The project is financed by the Swedish Energy Agency and will be conducted in collaboration with a EU-financed project on the restauration of dammed rivers.

Duties: Your duties include research, teaching and coursework within the project’s subject area.

Qualifications required: To be eligible for a PhD student position the applicant must hold a master degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field. Experience and knowledge within one or several of the following fields is required: sediment transport, sediment reactivity, biogeochemistry, fluvial geomorphology, limnology.  Candidates must be able to express themselves very well in spoken as well as written English. In the evaluation of candidates, we will emphasise personal qualities such as independence and teamwork skills.

Qualifications desired: Previous experience with laboratory experiments, and with field work. Basic knowledge of GIS, modelling and statistics. Driving license for car (EU class B).

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.

Starting date: 2021-01-01, or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. The graduate program covers four years of full-time study. The salary will be set according to local agreements. Rules governing PhD candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines.
