Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM)

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University provides a broad international environment for research and teaching. The Department's research covers Three collaborative and partially integrated sections: Cancer, infections and defense as well as genetics and genomics. More info: http://www.imbim.uu.se/research-areas/

The Jern research group at IMBIM now seeks a motivated researcher interested in working with retrovirus-host evolution.

Project description: The Jern research group studies coevolution among retrovirus and their host species (https://imbim.uu.se/research-groups/genetics-and-genomics/Jern+Patric/). The group takes advantage of the latest advances within large-scale sequencing projects and uses bioinformatics to study traces of retroviruses in genomes of humans, domestic animals and other vertebrates to improve understanding of retrovirus evolution and effects on host genome function and evolution.

Duties: Conduct research within projects aimed at studying retrovirus diversity and coevolution with host species from analysis of large-scale sequencing data and endogenous retroviruses in vertebrate DNA. The work includes bioinformatics and method development for identifying and annotating sequence variation in endogenous retroviruses within and between species and their populations to study spread and to identify evolutionary interactions between retroviruses and their hosts. The work also includes ensuring reproducible research through careful documentation and publication of scientific articles. Some teaching may be included.

Qualifications: Doctoral degree in bioinformatics, genomics, or a topic that the employer considers to be equivalent. Documented experience in bioinformatic analysis methodology, large-scale sequence analysis and population genetics are merits, as are programming skills in Bash, R, Perl or Python. Very good oral and written proficiency in English is required. The candidate is expected to take initiative and develop the project, document the work for reproducible research, and collaborate with the group's other members as well as with national and international partners. Emphasis is placed on personal suitability.

Application is received in Uppsala university recruitment system and is expected to contain i) CV, ii) a brief letter describing background, research interest and motivation to apply for the advertised position; iii) contact information for two references (telephone and email address).
