Uppsala universitet, institutionen för fysik och astronomi

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities. Find out more at www.physics.uu.se.

Research environment: The division of Materials theory at Uppsala University offers a world-class environment for materials theory and quantum matter theory research, with interests spanning from strongly correlated and topological states of matter to atomistic spin simulations and first-principles calculations of a very broad range of functional materials. The division currently consists of approximately 90 researchers, of which about a third are PhD students. The project will be carried out in the research group of Professor Annica Black-Schaffer, currently consisting of ten PhD students and postdocs. For more information, please visit the group webpage: http://materials-theory.physics.uu.se/blackschaffer.

Project description: We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious PhD student in quantum condensed matter theory for a project on unconventional and topological superconductivity. The overall aim of the PhD project is to find and characterize new topological superconductors, with a special focus on materials with a flat band normal dispersion. Flat bands near the Fermi level make materials highly susceptible to a transition into an ordered state, where a superconducting phase is one concrete possibility. One prime example that will be studied in this project is the recently discovered superconducting phase in twisted bilayer graphene. The project will involve large-scale numerical work, but also significant analytical components. This PhD project is part of a larger project focusing on new frontiers of topological matter, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

Requirements: The applicant should hold a Master's degree in physics, or equivalent, with a strong background in condensed matter theory or many-body theory. Fluency in both spoken and written English is an absolute prerequisite.

Additional qualifications: Good programming skills are advantageous.

Application: The application should include a personal letter, explaining scientific interests and motivation for pursuing a PhD degree, CV, and a verified list of course grades. If available, a Master’s thesis (finished or in draft form) can also be included. In addition, two letters of recommendation should be sent directly by the letter writer to annica.black-schaffer@physics.uu.se with the subject line “Letter of Recommendation, PhD Position 2020”.

Employment: The position as a PhD student is limited to four years of full-time studies, consisting of research and coursework. Other duties at the department, related to teaching and administration, may extend the position at a level of most 20%. Further information is available at www.physics.uu.se.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/?languageId=1.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.

Starting date: 01-11-2020 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7.

Scope of employment: 100 %
