Duties/Project description: Uppsala University hereby declares a PhD student position, at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, starting July 2018, to be open for application. The PhD-studies will be focusing on ion beam-based materials research and its technological applications with preliminary starting date in September 2020.

The Ion Physics group studies interaction of swift ions and photons with matter in solid and gaseous forms at an atomic and molecular level. The research deals, beside basic physics, with applications using different mass-spectrometric analytical techniques for advanced materials research. These methods permit to determine concentrations and depth profiles of atoms and molecules in a material with very high accuracy for samples from biological, environmental and technological contexts. A 5 MV tandem accelerator, a 350 kV high current ion implanter and a Low-Energy Ion Scattering System form the main experimental platform.

The focus of the present PhD-project is to investigate synthesis and modification of thin-film systems by in-situ studies, i.e. while the processes take place. The method to be applied is primarily Low-Energy Ion Scattering in combination with several classical tools for synthesis and analysis used in surface science. Specifically, different thin film systems of silicides, oxides and nitrides based on transition metals will be investigated. The focus will be on analysis of composition and structure of the material systems and its dependence on the manufacturing process as well as other external stimuli. Investigations of more fundamental character can be part of the present project to obtain better quantification of experimental data. Complementary studies using equipment at the tandem accelerator and using the Low-Energy Ion Scattering tool can be part of the project.

Requirements: The successful candidate must have a master of science in engineering physics / physics or equivalent.
The candidate must also have good communication skills and excellent study merits, and good skills in oral and written English.

Additional qualifications: Experiences in interdisciplinary materials science and modelling will be considered a merit.

Other: Appointment as a graduate student requires that the holder is admitted or will be admitted to PhD studies, where applicant’s ability to successfully complete the doctoral studies will be decisive. The PhD position is for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years including departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). Information about doctoral education, eligibility requirements and admission rules can be found on the web site of the Faculty of Technology http://www.teknat.uu.se/utbildning/forskarniva/.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.

Starting date: 01-09-2020 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7.

Scope of employment: 100 %
