The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. The department hosts a dynamic research milieu and is internationally oriented. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and some 300-400 students from around the world are enrolled every academic year. We are seeking to fill:

  • One PhD position in peace and conflict research with focus on forecasting climate-related complex emergencies and population displacement.

Work description: The PhD candidate will be part of a project led by Håvard Hegre and Nina von Uexkull. The project is a sub-component of the MISTRA Geopolitics research program. A summary of the project and its deliverables is given here.

The holder of the position is to pursue a project that uses machine-learning methods to forecast complex emergencies and related migration flows. The project should include the development of 1) a measurement model for forced population displacement/out-migration, and 2) a forecasting model of displacement/out-migration based on the ViEWS infrastructure. Beyond that, the successful candidate is free to define and develop his or her own project within the parameters of the project as described here.

PhD candidates primarily focus on their own doctoral education. A maximum of 20% of the position may involve other administrative and educational responsibilities at the Department. All teaching at the Department, as well as most seminars and meetings, are in English.

Qualifications: Employment as a PhD candidate requires acceptance into the DPCR’s PhD programme, which is decided through an evaluation of the applicant’s ability to successfully complete the programme. 4) certified transcripts of academic records

5) a project plan (3-5 pages), mainly focusing on the parts of the project that the candidate will develop on his/her own

6) letters of reference/recommendation (max 2 letters) or a list of references (max 2) which can be contacted

7) writing samples (1-3 samples)

Salary: The position is fully funded. Local salary rules will apply.

Start date: 1 January 2021, or as otherwise agreed.
