The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is Sweden's largest and most versatile Earth Science department. We lead education and research in Geophysics; Air, water and landscape sciences; Natural resources and sustainable development; Mineralogy, petrology and tectonics; Paleobiology as well as Wind energy. More than 2,200 students attend our education at the undergraduate and graduate levels each year. We are around 250 employees and have over 30 nationalities represented at the department, in addition to Uppsala, also at Campus Gotland.

The position as postdoctoral researcher is placed at Campus Gotland, Visby, within the research program Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (NRHU). NRHU research focuses on the availability, use and management of natural resources and ecosystem services as well as effects on the environment and society. The interdisciplinary research in NRHU acknowledges that the environment and its natural resources and ecosystem services constitute a prerequisite for strong sustainable development. Research themes in NRHU at Campus Gotland include sustainability aspects of recreational fisheries, nature tourism, coastal zone management, ecosystem services, etc. NRHU also hosts the Baltic University Program, the collaboration project Blue Centre Gotland and the Zennström guest professorship in Climate Change Leadership. NRHU is partly responsible for a bachelor program in Environmental Science and a master program in Sustainable Destination Development at Campus Gotland. Duties/Project description: The postdoctoral position will focus on Management of recreational fishing and fishing tourism in a Baltic Sea regional perspective. Recreational fishing, i.e. all non-commercial fishing, is a major leisure activity in both Sweden and other countries. In Sweden, about 1.3 million people fish annually with an expenditure around SEK 10 billion per year. Further, recreational fishing is an important element of nature-based tourism, which supports small and medium sized businesses, mainly in rural areas. A necessary prerequisite for recreational fishing to continue to be an important part of Swedish outdoor life, economy and rural development is viable fish stocks and sustainable management of the fishery. Challenges for fish stocks include environmental problems and damage to fish habitats as well as the fishing pressure from recreational fishing itself.

The future management and development of recreational fishing and fishing tourism is based on knowledge about status and development of fish stocks, but equally important is knowledge about how people fish, how they can contribute to sustainable fishing and socio-economic values ​​of fishing. Environmental measures and restoration of fish habitats are central to promoting fish stocks. Other management tools include catch reporting, guidelines for fish handling during catch and release, regulations on access, catches and gear, and stocking of fish where natural populations are weak, etc. In this context, it is necessary to account for anglers’ knowledge and perspectives on different management tools, in order to design management that anglers understand, accept and follow.

We are now seeking a postdoctoral fellow who can contribute to developing research in any of the following areas from a Baltic Sea regional perspective: (1) Anglers’ knowledge and attitudes to prioritized management tools and measures; (2) Anglers' perspective on the quality of fishing and fishing destination in a context of management and socio-economic valuation; or (3) Evaluation of environmental measures and restorations in aquatic environments. The research results are expected to contribute to the development of recommendations for the future management of recreational fishing and fishing tourism, thereby ensuring socio-economic values ​​and ecosystem services from coastal areas, lakes and rivers.

The postdoctoral position may include teaching to a maximum of 20% of full time.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree, in Environmental Science, Ecology, Earth Science, Geography or Environmental Economics. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Very good spoken and written English skills are required.

Additional qualifications: Practical experiences of survey and interview methodology as well as data analyses are particular merits. Familiarity with or work experience of nature tourism or recreational fisheries are merits. Swedish language skill is a merit. Personal qualities such as dedication, motivation, initiative and independence are valuable.
