Uppsala University, Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology

Uppsala University is establishing a new graduate school in sustainable development. The main mission of the graduate school is to conduct research based on key social challenges, where local relevance meets international excellence. The research will include changed energy systems, sustainable consumption and destinations development, and will address significant issues such as conservation and change, as well as the definition and management of resources. The graduate school is rooted in ongoing interdisciplinary collaborations in research and education, conducted in an international environment. Uppsala University Campus Gotland, where the graduate school is located, is a hub for the University's research and education in sustainability. We work with international partners, visiting researchers and local players with a special focus on knowledge development to cope with the changes needed to live well during climate change. As a PhD student, you will be part of this interdisciplinary research environment. You will also benefit from the courses, seminars and first-class doctoral supervision offered at the graduate school.

At the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology (http://antro.uu.se/), education and research is conducted on many of the complex contexts that characterize today's globalized world. Focusing on the human being in today's society, the department has a large thematic diversity of research projects spread across all corners of the world. At Campus Gotland, there is a strong ethnological research profile on issues of cultural heritage, storytelling and sustainable visits.

Duties/Project description: Education at PhD level has a duration of four years, financed with employment as PhD candidate. PhD candidates are expected to conduct their education at the research level by working full time and by participating actively in the activities of the department and the graduate school in sustainable development. Obligatory administrative and teaching duties at the department may not exceed 20% of full-time.

The research program deals with Sustainable destination development, a field of research that with a strong sustainability perspective and systems´ thinking explores how destinations both can contribute to and be affected by sustainable visits and sustainable places of visits. Within the graduate school, this theme will be explored in three PhD projects with different orientations.

The specific project in this call mainly relates to the broader ethnological research areas of narrativity, cultural heritage and sustainability. With Gotland as a starting point, the relation between sustainability, islands, tourism and cultural heritage is focused through the concrete, local contexts in which discourses are articulated, negotiated and fixed.

In order for the application to be considered, it is a requirement that the applicants proposed project clearly describes how data collection and field work is to be carried out and how the project links with the thematic and regional orientations of the research program.

Requirements: Admittance to postgraduate education in Ethnology requires basic as well as special eligibility. Postgraduate education in Ethnology is regulated by the general study plan. For information on eligibility and prerequisites, see (https://antro.uu.se/admissions/phd-studies/). Documented knowledge in the areas of sustainability, cultural heritage and narrativity is particularly meritorious.

When new PhD students are recruited, applicants should be selected who, after a qualitative overall assessment of competence and skill, are deemed to have the best conditions to carry out and develop current tasks, especially within the current doctoral projects, and contribute to a positive development of the research area.

The selection process will consider the applicant’s capacity to complete the education at the research level. In order to be considered, the application must explain clearly how the project constitutes a contribution to the overall aims of the research program. These aspects are judged based upon the applicant’s research plan and how this plan relates to existing research at the department and the research program. The research plan must describe how fieldwork for the proposed project is to be carried out. In addition, publications and university essays are important when judging an applicant’s ability to follow and benefit from the doctoral program. The ability to express oneself in both written and spoken Swedish and English is considered important.
