Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from sub-microscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. For more information see www.geo.uu.se. The successful candidate will join the research program Air, Water and Landscape Science, Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University, Sweden.

The Program of Air, Water and Landscape Sciences (LUVAL) carries out research and education within the topics of hydrology, meteorology, environmental assessment and physical geography. This position will be placed into the geohydrology research group. For more information see: www.geo.uu.se/forskning/luval/.

Duties/Project description: We are recruiting a researcher in hydrology at the Department of Earth Sciences, Programe for Air, Water and Landscape Sciences. The position is part of a research project funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR). The goal of the project is to fill existing knowledge gaps in hydrological climate change impact studies. We will strengthen the basis for robust projections of future climate change impacts on hydrological conditions by developing new dynamic and multi-dimensional methods to reduce uncertainties. The project is a close multidisciplinary collaboration of experts within climatology, hydrology and environmental research. The candidate will be expected to collaborate closely with the project partners. Tasks include among others hydrological modelling and the analysis/evaluation of different hydrological model structures and parameterization techniques.

Requirements: The applicant shall have a PhD degree in hydrology, physical geography, environmental assessment, climatology, or similar at the time of application. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English. Knowledge in mathematics and statistics is a requirement, as well as previous work experience in programming and hydrological modelling. We attach great importance to personal qualities such as collaboration skills, ability to work independently, scientific maturity and creativity.

Additional qualifications: Work experience with at least one conceptual hydrological model, analysis/evaluation of different hydrological model structures and/or parameterization techniques are merits. Expertise in Matlab or R is desirable. Additionally, experience in working with large amounts of data and different data mining or optimization techniques can be advantageous.

Application: The application should include a cover letter shortly describing your personal motivation for applying to this position and your previous research experience, a CV, copies of the examination certificates, PhD thesis, contact details of two references and other possible documents the applicant wishes to include. In addition, a brief statement (maximum 2 page) of what in your opinion are the greatest challenges for hydrological climate change impact studies to produce reliable research results and how to address them should be included. We would also like to know the earliest possible date for starting.
