PhD student in Theory of Magnetic Materials and Spintronics - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

Research group: The Division of Materials Theory is known to have a world-class research environment in solid state theory, including both numerical and analytical models. The research is focused on electronic structures, magnetism, spintronics, topological phases of matter, correlated phenomena and green energy solutions.

Research project and work duties: Electrons possess a magnetic property called 'spin' that can be up or down. Spin-polarized electrons or spins form the basis for spintronics that enabled ultrahigh-density magnetic memory storage and precision sensing, thereby revolutionizing the information technology age. Over the past decade, the advent of two-dimensional materials brought a fresh stimulus for spintronics. This project aims to explore two dimensional materials for spintronic applications. The PhD student will be part of a joint experimental and theoretical project on spintronics and its applications to two-dimensional materials. The tools to be used are primarily electronic structure theory coupled to quantum theory of transport. Interaction with experimental partners of the project is an important part of the research.

The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research duties, which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

Employment conditions The Doctoral student position is a 4-year appointment, and the candidate will primarily devote the time to his/her own research studies. Extension, up to a maximum of five years, is possible by including department duties at a level of at most 20%, typically teaching. The position is fully financed and the salary is in accordance with local guidelines at Uppsala University. The applicant must be eligible for Postgraduate studies at Uppsala University. Qualifications: The applicant is expected to have a master's degree in Physics, or equivalent, with a good background in solid-state physics and theory in general.

Additional qualifications: We give great importance to personal qualifications of the candidates. We are looking for a pro-active person with great ability to work independently as well as to function well in collaborations. The project requires that the candidate needs to be committed and display strong analytical and problem-solving skills. The candidate must have a good knowledge of English, both oral and in writing, and, in general, good communication skills.
